Likina Amebaw won the women’s 5km road title at the World Athletics Road Running Championships

Athletics News . Running News Article

From the sound of the starting gun under clear Danish skies, the race established a blistering yet calculated tempo. The flat, lightning-fast Copenhagen course allowed the premier flight of distance runners to quickly separate themselves into a formidable lead pack. Among the heavy favorites was Ethiopia’s fast-rising distance star Likina Amebaw, whose tactical maturity and exceptional summer form made her the primary target for the rest of the elite field. Coming straight off a dominant 5000m victory at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest just six days prior, Amebaw looked to close her historic summer season by replicating her track success on the roads.

Opting for an aggressive, front-running strategy, Amebaw did not wait for the tactical chess match to unfold late in the race. Instead, she seized control of the pace right from the opening kilometer, forcing the rest of the pack to stretch out behind her. Navigating the sweeping turns of the beautiful Danish capital, she maintained a punishing cadence that continually wore down her direct competitors.

As the athletes entered the decisive closing stages of the race, Amebaw made her definitive, gold-medal-winning move. At the 4km mark, she threw down a final, crushing acceleration that fractured the remaining resistance of her closest chasers. Showcasing devastating explosive power and immense physical composure, the world-ranked No. 1 over 5000m stormed down the home straight completely unbothered, crossing the finish line to stop the clock in a spectacular time of 14:41 minutes.

With this majestic victory, Amebaw claimed her first-ever official world title on the road, completing a legendary haul of two global crowns in a span of just one week. Her performance cemented her legacy as the undisputed queen of the distance, transitioning seamlessly from the track to the roads.

While Amebaw celebrated a dominant solo exhibition over the final stretch, a fierce battle for the remaining podium steps played out behind her. Securing the silver medal with a highly resilient performance was Kenya’s Caroline Makandi Gitonga. Gitonga ran a masterfully judged race, acting as the primary chaser to Amebaw’s fierce rhythm throughout the afternoon. Though unable to answer the Ethiopian’s final gear change at the 4km mark, Gitonga held her composure beautifully to cross the line seven seconds back in an excellent time of 14:48 minutes.

Completing the global podium was Australia’s Rose Davies, who produced a sensational breakthrough performance to capture the bronze medal. Davies stayed perfectly connected to the premier flight throughout the high-velocity race, executing a brilliantly timed final kick down the home straight. Crossing the line in a phenomenal 14:50 minutes, Davies not only secured a historic global medal but also shattered the Oceanian continental record, finishing just two seconds adrift of the silver medal.

The remainder of the elite field highlighted the remarkable depth that defined the streets of Copenhagen. Missing out on the podium steps by a narrow margin but still finishing well inside the elite top five was Ethiopia’s Asayech Ayichew, who clocked an impressive 14:53 minutes. She was followed closely by Kenya’s standout performer Lilian Kasait Rengeruk, who rounded out the premier top five by stopping the clock in a stellar 14:55 minutes. Showing excellent tactical execution, Spain’s Marta García led the European continent charge in sixth place, breaking the beam in a strong personal best of 14:59 minutes to ensure six women finished inside the coveted 15-minute barrier.

Beyond the individual glory, the collective results across the field culminated in a massive celebration for East African distance running. Backed by Amebaw’s individual triumph and supported by the superb depth of her compatriots, the Ethiopian contingent also proudly walked away with the prestigious 5km mixed team title, successfully edging out strong team challenges from Australia and Kenya.

Ultimately, the women’s 5km championship in Copenhagen will be remembered as a true masterclass in front-running confidence and pacing psychology. Likina Amebaw’s perfectly executed strategy dismantled a world-class international field and gave the a defining hallmark moment of excellence in the heart of Denmark.
