Bizuager Aderra returns to Istanbul to defend her marathon title
The classic Istanbul Marathon is known for its extremely treacherous course. The course offers its toughest test right at the end – a climb into the historic city center after the 40th kilometer, when the runners’ strength is almost completely exhausted.
On November 1, reigning champion Bizuager Aderra of Ethiopia will return to defend her title in the 48th edition of the Istanbul Marathon. Her main rival will be world championship silver medalist Judith Jeptum Korir of Kenya. The men’s race will also feature 2024 champion Dejene Debela. A total of 44,000 runners are expected to take part in the marathon and the accompanying shorter distances.
Last season, 23-year-old Adera prevailed in a close battle between four athletes in the final kilometer, crossing the finish line in 2:26:19 and improving her personal best by more than two minutes on one of the most difficult courses.
“It was the biggest victory of my life”, said Bizuager Aderra.
After her success in Turkey, she also took first place in a marathon in China with a time of 2:30:21. The Ethiopian’s big goal remains to break the 2:20 mark, but before that, she faces the challenge of retaining her crown on the Bosphorus.
