Lemuela Wutz claims her first national title at the Austrian 10km Road Running Championships
The roads of Kobersdorf, Austria, delivered an exceptional display of elite distance running on October 3, 2026, as the town hosted the Austrian 10km Road Running Championships. Held in conjunction with the 5th Waldquellelauf in the Burgenland region, the National Senior Road Running Championships drew the country’s finest endurance athletes to battle for the prestigious national crown. In the elite women’s division, the race unfolded as a highly strategic affair influenced by challenging wind conditions, forcing runners to rely heavily on pacing and patience.
Ultimately, DSG Wien’s Lemuela Wutz emerged victorious, securing her first-ever individual Austrian national title with a stellar time of 35:36 minutes. She outmaneuvered a persistent field, finishing ahead of runner-up Susanne Silberbauer, who crossed the line in 35:54 minutes. Triathlete and distance runner Katharina Kiesenhofer rounded out the podium, securing third place with a solid mark of 36:20 minutes.

From the crack of the starter’s pistol, the tactical narrative of the race took shape. A difficult, swirling wind swept across the Kobersdorf course, discouraging the athletes from making early, aggressive breakaways. Recognizing the climate, the lead pack formed early and maintained a controlled, conservative tempo to shield themselves from the elements.
Lemuela Wutz anchors her performance on immaculate situational awareness. Instead of burning vital energy in the opening kilometers, the DSG Wien standout bided her time near the front, closely monitoring her primary adversaries, Susanne Silberbauer and Katharina Kiesenhofer. The trio managed to stretch out the field past the midway mark, detaching themselves from the primary chasing pack.
As the race entered its definitive final third, Wutz executed her tactical plan flawlessly. Feeling fresh out of her intensive marathon training block, she launched a calculated acceleration that her rivals simply could not match. Wutz quickly built a comfortable cushion over Silberbauer, maintaining her high stride turnover all the way to the finish line to stop the clock at 35:36. Silberbauer, representing LAG Genböch Haus Ried, put forward a courageous chase to earn the silver medal in 35:54, while Kiesenhofer took a well-deserved bronze in 36:20.
“It was a super race for me, which I managed well tactically,” a delighted Wutz remarked following her breakthrough performance. The triumph marks a significant career milestone for the 1998-born runner, validating years of steady progression across track and road disciplines.
What makes Wutz’s 10km victory even more impressive is that she did not specifically taper for a short-distance track event. Instead, she used the national championships as a high-intensity tune-up race while in the heavy mileage phase of her build-up for the Valencia Marathon in early December. Her ability to drop a sub-36 minute 10km performance amidst grueling marathon training signals excellent aerobic health and puts her on standard to challenge her personal bests later this winter.
Beyond the podium finishers, the battle for the remaining top-five slots provided plenty of excitement for the spectators lining the Kobersdorf streets. Sandrina Illes delivered a highly competitive performance, securing fourth place with a time of 36:37 minutes. Illes displayed exceptional grit, holding off a late-race surge from Amelie Sattler, who completed the top five just four seconds behind in 36:41 minutes.
The depth of the race was further emphasized by Ulrike Köstinger finishing sixth in 37:03, alongside strong open-class performances from German guest runners Julia Bruhn (36:09) and Freya Wenske (36:16), who added an extra layer of international prestige to the weekend’s festivities.
