Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui reclaimed her crown at the women’s TCS New York City Marathon

The 50th-anniversary route celebration of the TCS New York City Marathon delivered a grandstand finish for the history books on Sunday, November 1, 2026. Winding through the iconic five boroughs of New York City, the elite women’s division provided a masterclass in tactical patience, physical grit, and dramatic pacing shifts. When the dust settled in a sunny but chilly Central Park, Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui reclaimed her crown, crossing the finish line in a spectacular 2:24:36 hours to capture her second career victory at the world’s most famous 26.2-mile race.

The elite field set off from Staten Island under perfect autumnal running conditions, leaning into a cagey and measured strategy through the early stages. Defending champion Hellen Obiri assumed front-running duties early on, shepherding a heavily stacked lead pack through the first 5 kilometers in a modest 18:23. The intentional pacing kept the field dense, allowing top international stars and a formidable contingent of American runners to remain tucked comfortably into the draft well past the halfway mark.

By the 30-kilometer timing mat, the tension peaked as the leading pack began testing each other’s reserves. A tight, eight-woman vanguard—separated by less than two seconds—surged past the standard barriers, with Chepkirui, Obiri, and marathon debutant Weini Kelati trading micro-leads along the undulating avenues.

The defining moves materialized over the final two miles as the race entered the rolling terrain of Central Park. Chepkirui unleashed a series of calculated, surging adjustments to break the group apart, forcing a high-octane battle down the final stretch. In a brilliant display of patience, Chepkirui waited until the final 150 meters to execute a devastating kick, pulling away from Obiri to seal the top spot in 2:24:36.

While Chepkirui celebrated at the tape, a stunning twist unfolded mere meters behind her. The United States’ Jessica McClain summoned a magnificent closing surge, systematically reeling in the fading defending champion in the final few strides. McClain stopped the clock at 2:24:42 to secure a phenomenal second-place finish, edging past Obiri by a single second. McClain’s masterful performance marked a historic milestone for the home crowd, making her the first American woman to secure a top-three finish on the New York podium since Shalane Flanagan in 2018.

Hellen Obiri, missing out on becoming the first back-to-back women’s champion in a decade, settled for a hard-fought third place in 2:24:43 after anchoring the afternoon’s fierce tempo.

The depth of the 2026 field was further illustrated by the legendary Edna Ngeringwony Kiplagat. At 46 years old, the timeless marathon icon put together yet another tactical masterpiece, navigating the late-stage bridges and park inclines to place fourth overall in 2:25:42. Four seconds later, Kenya’s Mercy Chelangat crossed the timing mats in 2:25:46, rounding out a dominant top five heavily populated by East African elites.

The secondary chasing pack showcased the bright future of the American long-distance circuit. Carrie Ellwood held excellent form through the final miles to secure a stellar sixth place in 2:26:28. Right behind her, highly anticipated marathon debutant Weini Kelati Frezghi proved her track speed transfers beautifully to the roads, navigating the tactical pressures of the five boroughs to finish seventh in 2:26:51.

Germany’s Fabienne Königstein completed the upper tier, crossing the Central Park finish line in 2:28:49 to place tenth against one of the most competitive fields assembled on the Abbott World Marathon Majors circuit.
