Athletics News . Triple Jump News Article

The Cuban-born Italian athlete Andy Diaz Hernandez won the triple jump title at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China. The European champion and bronze medalist in the event at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Andy Díaz Hernández triumphed with a national record of 17.80m.

The Chinese competitor Yaming Zhu took silver with 17.33m, while Almir Dos Santos (Brazil) took bronze with 17.22m.

Defending champion Hugues Fabrice Zango (Burkina Faso) missed out on the podium. He finished fourth with 17.15m.

Andy Diaz Hernandez started as the favorite thanks to the then world lead of 17.71m he set to win the European indoor title in Apeldoorn earlier this month.

He represented Cuba at the 2017 World Championships, finishing seventh in the final. Andy Diaz Hernandez traveled to the 2020 Summer Olympics but did not compete due to injury. He later defected to Italy. His personal bests in the event are 17.75m outdoors (+0.9 m/s, Florence 2023) and 17.80m indoors (Nanjing 2025).
