Armand Duplantis won his third consecutive pole vault world title with a new WR
Armand Duplantis won his third consecutive world title in the pole vault. The Swedish athlete put on a show for the spectators in the stands after reaching the gold with a new world record of 6.30m. The 25-year-old Swede, who is becoming a living legend in athletics, cleared the height on his third attempt, coming close on his second attempt. This is the first time the 6.30m mark has been reached in the pole vault.
Armand Duplantis now has three outdoor world titles after his gold medals in Eugene 2022 and Budapest 2023.
Armand Duplantis is only the second man after Ukrainian Sergey Bubka to win three consecutive world titles in the pole vault. Sergey Bubka broke the world record 17 times in the 10-year period between 1984 and 1994, something Duplantis is on track to improve.
“I’m so happy, I can’t explain it. I’ve really enjoyed Tokyo in the last two weeks. I’ve enjoyed everything so much. I felt like the only way to leave Japan was to set the world record. That was my mindset”, said Armand Duplantis. “At this moment I don’t know what awaits me, and I don’t care. I’m just going to enjoy the moment. I felt really good all day. I knew I had the record in me. If I have the right track, I know anything is possible. It’s all about speed”, added he.
Greek record holder Emmanouil Karalis continued his two-year winning streak and won the silver medal with 6.00m. The European indoor champion from Apeldoorn this winter and silver medalist at the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing was on the verge of being eliminated from the competition at 5.95m, clearing the height on his third attempt. After clearing the height, the Greek had to immediately return to the 6.00m sector for a try. He cleared the height on his first attempt, then fouled once at 6.10m, 6.15m and 6.20m.
Australian athlete Kurtis Marschall fought for the bronze medal tonight with 5.95m. Two-time world champion Sam Kendricks (USA) finished fourth with the same result.
