
Diane van Es broke the European 5km road run record in the Monaco
Dutch long-distance runner Diane van Es broke the European 5km record of the compatriot Sifan Hassan at the Monaco Run 5km. The Dutch athlete finished second, clocking at 14:39 min, behind the Ethiopian winner Likina Amebaw, who finished in 14:33 min.
Although not winning the race, Diane van Es improved the European 5km record of her compatriot Sifan Hassan, set in 2019, by 5 seconds.
Klara Lukan (Slovenia) also came close to the previous European record, finishing third in 14:46 min.
Diane van Es is a distinguished Dutch athlete specializing in middle- and long-distance running. She achieved notable success by securing a silver medal in the 10,000m at the 2024 European Championships, as well as a bronze medal in the 5,000m at the 2021 European Under-23 Championships. Diane van Es also set the Dutch record for the 10km on the road with a time of 30:29 min on February 12, 2023. Furthermore, she has claimed four national titles in her events, including the 5,000m and 10km.
In the men’s race at Monaco Run 5km, Isaac Kimeli (Belgium) won the gold with 13:15 min, followed by Frederik Ruppert (Germany) with 13:21 min and Djilali Bedrani (France) with 12:22 min.
