Elaine Thompson-Herah did not register for World Athletics Championships qualifiers
Jamaican fans are worried after Elaine Thompson-Herah’s name was not included in the list of participants for the National Championships, which determine the country’s squad for the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
Elaine Thompson-Herah’s absence from the Jamaican men’s and women’s National Championships has raised concerns about the country’s medal chances at the 2025 World Championships.
The championships are scheduled for June 26-29 at the National Stadium in Kingston, where a number of athletes will compete for places on the various national teams.
The focus is on the men and women who will compete for quotas for the World Championships in Tokyo from September 13-21. However, one key name will be missing after Elaine Thompson-Herah, the world’s fastest woman, did not register to compete.
Elaine Thompson-Herah, the first woman to win the 100m and 200m double at two consecutive Olympics (2016 and 2020), has yet to start her 2025 season despite earlier reports that she had returned to training, raising concerns about her future in the sprint.
The 32-year-old athlete has personal bests of 10.54 sec for the 100m and 21.53 sec for the 200m. In recent years, however, injuries have hampered her, and she has not competed in a year since finishing last in the 100m at the New York Grand Prix last June when she left the track injured.
She missed the Paris Olympics, failing to defend her titles, but hopes of a strong comeback this year are quickly fading with her failure to register for the National Championships. This is a strong indication that she is not ready yet, leaving veterans Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce and Shericka Jackson, as well as youngsters Tia and Tina Clayton, to carry the country’s flag at the World Championships.
This has left Jamaican fans worried about their chances at the World Championships after witnessing a poor showing at the Paris Olympics, where they failed to win a gold medal in the sprints.
