
French pole vaulter Marie-Julie Bonnin
Marie-Julie Bonnin is a French pole vault athlete, who is World Indoor champion from Nanjing 2025 and European Indoor bronze medalist from Apeldoorn 2025. She also has a gold from Chorzow Diamond League and is European U23 champion. Her personal best in the pole vault is 4.75m, which is also a national record.
Marie-Julie Bonnin was born on December 17, 2001, in Bordeaux, France. She started in athletics at an early age and showed her great skills and talent in the pole vault. She is a French junior champion and also 2019 European Athletics U20 Championships silver medalist.
Marie-Julie Bonnin started her competitive career in 2016. Initially, she competed in various of events, including 60m, 100m, long jump, as well as pole vault. During the next season, however, she turned her focus on pole vault, finishing 7th at the Nantes French U18 Indoor Championships and winning the bronze at the Dreux French U18 Championships. Earlier in the season she cleared 3.80m, which was her personal best.
In 2018, Marie-Julie Bonnin proved to be one of the most prominent and talented young athletes of the country, winning the bronze at the Val-de-Reuil French U18 Indoor Championships, Pontoise French Club Championships, Marrakesh Gymnasiade, and Blois Meting Selection CA/JU, as well as the silver at the Bondoufle French U18 Championships, clearing a personal best of 4.10m. Already quite young, during the season she overcame 4-meter mark three times.
Marie-Julie Bonnin made her first international triumph in 2019, winning the silver at the Boras European U20 Championships with a new personal best of 4.16m. Meanwhile, during the season, she won the pole vault gold at the Angers French U20 Championships, Meeting de Fronton, and Mont-de-Marsan Regional Championships, as well as the bronze at the Lievin French U20 Indoor Championships and Meeting d’Athletisme Music Jump in Albi.
The short 2020 season hampered the impetus of the French poile vaulter, but anyhow she won the gold at the Lyon Match Inter-Ligues U20/U18, silver at the Soiree US Talence add Meeting perche Bordeaux Athle, and the bronze at the Miramas French U20 Indoor Championships. She competed at the senior national championships, finishing 7th at the Lievin French Indoor Championships and 10th at the Albi French Championships.
Marie-Julie Bonnin continue gaining experience in 2021, but without having any significant wins and achievements. She won the pole vault gold at the Meeting Athletes Listes in Nantes, Meeting 4 sauts in Pierre-Benite, and Capitole Perche in Toulouse. She also won the bronze at the Caen French U23 Championships and finished 7th at the Miramas French Indoor Championships.
In 2022, Marie-Julie Bonnin won her first national honor, earning the silver at the Caen French Championships. She also earned the silver at the Meeting Stanislas Nancy and made her Diamond League debut at the Herculis Meeting International d’Athlétisme EBS in Monaco, but did not record a successful attempt. However, at the Munich European Athletics Championships she reached the final and finished 6th with her new personal best of 4.55m. By the end of the season she also competed at the Pescara Mediterranean Athletics U23 Championships, but again failed to register a successfull attempt. During the season she cleared the 4.50-meter mark five times.
Marie-Julie Bonnin started the 2023 season by winning the silver at the Valencia Mediterranean U23 Indoor Championships, as well as finishing 4th at the Perche en or in Roubaix and Meeting de Paris, as well as 7th at the Meeting de l’Eure in Val-de-Reuil. At the Aubiere French Indoor Championships she cleared 4.30m for the 4th place and also the same height at the Istanbul European Athletics Indoor Championships, which was not enough to overcome the qualifications. Marie-Julie Bonnin continue the season by winning the bronze at the Perche Elite Tour in Rouen, finishing 11th at the Diamond League’s Meeting de Paris and 7th at the prestigious Meeting Stanislas Nancy in Tomblaine. She won he first international pole vault title at the Espoo European Athletics U23 Championships, clearing 4.50m. She won the bronze at the CITIUS Meeting in Bern and competed at the Budapest World Athletics Championships, but did not overcome the qualifications. By the end of the season, she finished 4th at the Gala dei Castelli in Locarno, 7th at the 59. Palio Citta’ della Quercia in Rovereto, and 8th at the International Pole Vault for Women in Beckum.
In 2024, Marie-Julie Bonnin made her Olympics debut, participating at the Paris Games, finishing 11th in the final, clearing 4.60m. During the season she won her first senior national title at the Angers French Championships, but also earned the gold at the Meeting National d’Angouleme and Sky’s the Limit 2024 in Zweibrücken, the silver at the Meeting International de Montreuil, Meeting Stanislas Nancy, Toulouse Capitole Perche, and Meeting International Sotteville 2024, where set a new personal best of 4.70m, and the bronze at the Miramas French Indoor Championships.
Marie-Julie Bonnin won her first pole vault world title in 2025, triumphing with the gold at the Nanjing World Athletics Indoor Championships, setting a personal best and new national record of 4.75m. During the season, she won the bronze at the Apeldoorn European Athletics Indoor Championships and finished 8th at the Tokyo World Athletics Championships. Meanwhile, Marie-Julie Bonnin won the gold at the Silesia Kamila Skolimowska Memorial in Chorzow, Meeting International Sotteville 2025, Meeting International de Montreuil, Perche en Or in Roubaix, Starperche in Bordeaux, and Univers Perche in Superdevoluy. She also won the national titles at the Talence French Championships and Miramas French Indoor Championships.
