
Injuries forced Asafa Powell to end his career
Despite spending most of his years as an athlete and achieving great things, Asafa Powell insists that he never wanted to retire from the sport.
Asafa Powell announced his retirement on November 23, 2022, but later revealed that it was not a decision he made voluntarily. He explained that he had to retire from the sport due to injuries.
If he had the chance to return, Asafa Powell revealed that he would change his approach to many things and most importantly, he would take his career seriously to avoid injuries.
“Injuries take a lot of things away and I always say that if I could go back and change anything, I would change a lot of the decisions I made”, said Asafa Powell in a podcast. “There are decisions that I overlooked that could have cost me a lot. Injuries are our worst enemy, it’s the only thing that can stop us. It played an important role in my career, but I can never be ungrateful”, added he.
Asafa Powell is a former Jamaican sprinter renowned for his expertise in the 100m. He set the world record for this event two times, achieving times of 9.77 sec and 9.74 sec between June 2005 and May 2008. Asafa Powell has consistently surpassed the 10-second mark in competitive events, with a personal best of 9.72 sec, which ranks him fourth on the all-time list for men’s 100-metre performances. As of September 1, 2016, he has broken the ten-second barrier more than any other athlete, accomplishing this feat 97 times. Additionally, he holds the world record for the 100-yard dash, clocking in at 9.09 sec on May 27, 2010, in Ostrava, Czech Republic. In 2016, he secured the Olympics title in the 4x100m relay.
