Jakob Ingebrigtsen explained why he will start the season late and revealed his ambitious goals for 2026
Two-time Olympic champion Jakob Ingebrigtsen is taking a cautious approach in 2026, aiming for a strong return to the track, which will include a later start to the season. The Norwegian athlete is planning to start his season later as he hopes to make a big comeback after the struggles he endured in 2025.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen has endured a painful season with an Achilles injury that saw him retire in the 1,500m heats and finish 10th in the 5,000m final at the 2025 World Athletics Championships.
It was a tough time for the athlete, accustomed to winning, who admits he hates losing. Now he is determined to avoid a repeat of those results by taking a more cautious approach in 2026.
“The Achilles is very good”, said Jakob Ingebrigtsen. “But I’m a little more cautious because of the last few years. That’s why I’m prioritizing my preparation for the outdoor season. I’ll probably start at the Bislett Games in June. But my goals are to win two gold medals at the European Championships, win the Diamond League final and make a good attempt at the world record in the 1,500m, the mile and also the 5,000m”, added he, revealing his big ambitions for the year.
Jakob Ingebrigtsen will be aiming to win an eighth European Championship title and a fifth Diamond League title this year, with his sights also set on the 2027 World Championships in Beijing, where he will chase a third gold medal.
“I’ve never considered anyone my rival. Because I’m always competing with myself. And I don’t usually look at the start list. Because there will always be people who can threaten me or compromise my race, no matter what”, said Jakob Ingebrigtsen.
