Jimmy Gressier (France) won the 10,000m gold at the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo. The French athlete triumphed with the title after a thrilling final. At brutal and wet conditions, Jimmy Gressier edged out Ethiopian runner Yomif Kejelcha in a final sprint to become the first Frenchman to win a world medal in the event.
Thus, Jimmy Gressier clocked 28:55.77 min to win the gold, while Yomif Kejelcha finished in 28:55.83 min.
The bronze in men’s 10,000m running event went to Andreas Almgren (Sweden), who clocked 28:56.02 min.
Ishmael Rokitto Kipkurui (Kenya) and Nico Young (USA) completed the Top 5, but missed the podium.
Jimmy Gressier said that was a “dream come true”. “I believed in myself. It’s a childhood dream come true. I’ve always believed that an athlete, once they step on the track, can achieve great things”, added the emotional French athlete after the race.
“This is typical of my career. Some may have doubted my finish, but I always believed in myself. I said I would run here for a medal. On the final stretch I moved up to third, then second and finally the gold. Jakob (Ingebrigtsen) told me I was training too hard”, said Jimmy Gressier. “I made a few changes to my training to be more controlled. I had a lot of mental energy for the last lap and that helped me today. It really means a lot”, added the new world champion.
