Jorge Hodelin set a new World U20 long jump record of 8.46m at the Envol Trophee in France

Cuban track and field athlete Jorge Hodelin has set a new world record in the under-20 long jump after clearing an impressive 8.46m. The historic achievement was recorded on Saturday (July 13) at the Envol Trophee in Pierre-Benite, France, part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Challenger circuit.

The 19-year-old athlete, who finished fourth at the World Indoor Championships in March, improved his previous personal best of 8.34m, set last year. With the jump, he surpassed the previous under-20 world record of 8.38m, set by Italy’s Mattia Furlani in Rome in 2024.

Jorge Hodelin’s record attempt came in the second round of the competition, with his run including two more jumps over eight metres. He started with 8.06m (+1.6m/s), then made his phenomenal jump of 8.46m (+1.9m/s). On his third attempt he achieved 8.07m (+2.3m/s), then committed a foul and withdrew from further participation.

Jorge Hodelin’s achievement places him in third place in the world rankings for the season among men.

There were also strong results in other disciplines of the tournament. In the men’s pole vault, three athletes cleared 5.82m, with Thibaut Collet winning after counting the attempts. Anthony Ammirati came in second, and 18-year-old Zackaria Dia took third place, improving his personal best by 12cm. With this, he also improved the French national under-20 record, held by Anthony Ammirati, and climbed to second place in the all-time world youth rankings, ranking between world record holder Armand Duplantis and Anthony Ammirati.

In the women’s high jump, the winner was German Christina Honsel with a result of 1.94m, while in the women’s long jump, Rogilia-chriss Bissemo triumphed with 6.80m (+1.5 m/s).

The record is subject to the standard ratification procedure.
