Karsten Warholm won 300m hurdles at Oslo Diamond league with a new WR
The presence of the three fastest men in history in the 400m hurdles in one place led to a new world record, but in the 300m hurdles. Karsten Warholm proved why he is number one in the all-time 400m rankings after winning the 300m hurdles at the Diamond League in Oslo in a new world record of 32.67 sec. The Norwegian athlete also became the first man in history to go under 33 seconds in the event. The achievement is also a new tournament record and a new Diamond League record.
Karsten Warholm led convincingly, but in the final straight, the reigning Olympic champion Rai Benjamin took the lead. Under the thunderous applause of the packed stands, Karsten Warholm made an outstanding final sprint and grabbed the victory to the joy of his compatriots in the stadium and in front of the television screens. Rai Benjamin finished second in a personal best of 33.22 sec. Eugene 2022 World Champion Alison dos Santos rounded out the top three with a time of 33.84 sec.
“Of course, I’ve never really left, but it’s certainly nice to be back. The race went well, although I was quite worried about how close Rye (Benjamin) was getting to me, but I knew I could keep going over the last hurdle and get home. I usually drop back at the end of the 400m, so 300m suits me to a certain extent, but I’ll come back strong in the 400m on Sunday. Tonight the others dropped back and I came back strong. I’ve been doing a lot of training in the 200m and as you can see from today, I was very clean in the hurdles”, said Karsten Warholm after the race. “The crowd was amazing as always and the atmosphere was something different and I’m just so happy to be able to perform at my best in front of the crowd; it means a lot to me. There were some top stars here, which is great for Bislett, and it was great to see Usain (Bolt), and tomorrow we’ll have lunch and have a proper chat”, said added he after his impressive running.
In the women’s 400 m hurdles, Tokyo Olympic champion and former world record holder Dalilah Muhammad (USA) won with a time of 53.34 sec.
