Australian runner Lachlan Kennedy defeated his compatriot and sprint sensation Gout Gout in the 200m at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne. The 21-year-old Lachlan Kennedy, who previously held a personal best of 21.19 sec, produced an impressive performance to earn the win in 20.26 sec (0.4 m/s). Gout Gout remains second in 20.30 sec.

Lachlan Kennedy continued his winning streak after winning a silver medal in the 60m at the 2025 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Nanjing, China, earlier this month.

Gout Gout became the fastest Australian in the 200m last year when he broke Peter Norman’s national record set at the Mexico City 1968 Olympics.

The bronze in 200m at the Maurie Plant Meet in Melbourne remains for another Australian athlete – Calab Law, who clocked at 20.78 sec.

The Top 5 was completed by Kalinga Hewa Kumarage (Sri Lanka) and Aidan Murphy (Australia) with 20.89 sec and 20.98 sec, respectively.

In women’s 200m, the podium was again of three Australians. The gold was for Kristie Edwards with 23.18 sec, the silver was for Jessica Milat with 23.36 sec and the bronze went to Lakara Stallan with 23.39 sec.
