Malaika Mihambo does not think of retiring after the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo
Olympic long jump champion Malaika Mihambo does not believe that the World Athletics Championships in Tokyo will be the last of her career.
“I am not sure at this moment. However, I am quite sure that the 2027 World Championships in Beijing will be my last”, said she before the start of this year’s championships on Saturday. Malaika Mihambo is one of Germany’s best hopes for a medal.
Malaika Mihambo is returning to the World Championships for the first time since her triumph in Eugene (USA) in 2022. The two-time world champion had to miss the 2023 competition in Budapest.
“From a sporting point of view, 2023 was not ideal because no one voluntarily stays at home during a world championship. But after tearing a muscle fiber, unfortunately it was necessary. I am happy to be competing again”, said she.
The German returned to the international stage at the Paris Olympics last year, when she won silver. Tokyo holds a special place in her heart, as it was there that she achieved her greatest success – Olympic gold at the 2020 Games.
“In the present, I have to start over. So the memories of my Olympic victory are not very useful to me. When I think about Tokyo 2025, I imagine future successes, not past successes”, she concluded.
