Marta Alemayo won the women’s 3,000m gold in Astana

The 16-year-old Ethiopian long-distance runner Marta Alemayo won the women’s 3,000m at the World Athletics Tour Indoor Gold Label event in Astana. She set the world’s all-time U18 indoor record of 8:39.80 min. The U20 world cross-country champion shaved more than 6 seconds off her previous best, which had stood for 12 years.

Just a year older, her compatriot Shito Gumi took second place in the 3,000m in Kazakhstan with a time of 8:40.00 min, while another Ethiopian, Axumawit Embaye, finished third with a time of 8:41.06.

Daisy Jepkemei and Norah Jeruto from Kazakhstan finished 4th and 5th, missing the podium.

In men’s 1,500m, Kristian Uldbjerg Hansen won the gold with 3:39.03 min, while the silver went to Abdulkerim Teki and the bronze was for Charles Grethen.

Elnur Mukhitdinov earned the gold in men’s 400m, while Samuel Lengauer and Andrey Sokolov completed the Top 3 in the event.
