Mykolas Alekna improved his own discus throw world record breaking the 75-meter barrier
Lithuanian athlete Mykolas Alekna surpassed his own discus throw world record by over a meter, achieving an exceptional throw of 75.56 meters at the Oklahoma Throws Series. This event was part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting, held in Ramona on Sunday.
Returning to the venue where he previously set his record of 74.35m last year, the Olympic silver medalist not only improved his mark once but twice, beginning with a throw of 74.89m. He then extended his achievement with an outstanding 75.56-meter throw in the fourth round.
Australian Matt Denny, who reached a distance of 74.25m on Thursday in Ramona, also surpassed Mykolas Alekna’s former world record with a discus throw of 74.78m. The Olympic bronze medalist further demonstrated his skill with four additional throws exceeding 70 meters, including a top throw of 73.36m in the final round.
The competition showcased remarkable performances, with five athletes surpassing the 70-meter threshold and seven exceeding 69 meters. Sam Mattis from the USA, who secured second place behind Denny with a 70.08-meter throw three days earlier, improved to 71.27m to claim third place on Sunday. Germany’s Clemens Prufer achieved a fourth-place finish with a throw of 71.01m, while Lawrence Okoye from Great Britain took fifth with a distance of 70.76m.
Mykolas Alekna’s earlier record of 74.35m, set in Ramona on April 14 last year, broke the decades-long men’s world record of 74.08 meters, set by Jurgen Schult in 1986—16 years before Mykolas Alekna was born.
At just 22 years old, Mykolas Alekna has now become the first athlete to break the 75-meter barrier.
