
Polish hurdler Emilia Ankiewicz
Emilia Ankiewicz is a former Polish Olympics athlete specializing in the 400m hurdles. She is a silver medalist at the 2015 Summer Universiade and a four-time national champion.
Emilia Ankiewicz-Obukowicz, known in athletics as Emilia Ankiewicz only, was born on November 22, 1990, in Elblag, Poland. She started in athletics at an early age and showed great talent and skills.
Emilia Ankiewicz started her competitive career already in 2010, winning the 400m gold at the Gdansk Meeting and Slupsk Meeting. She also earned the silver at the Miedzyzdroje W. Komar & T. Slusarski Memorial in 400m and the gold at the Torun Memorial Grzegorza Duneckiego in 400m hurdles. During the season she won the 4x400m relay gold at the Krakow Polish National League First League.
In 2011, Emilia Ankiewicz continued performing at a high level, winning medals at the regional meetings in Gdansk, Bydgoszcz, Koszalin, and Chojnice. She won the 400m silver at the Torun Polish Junior Championships and the 400m hurdles gold at the Gdansk Polish U23 Championships.
Emilia Ankiewicz won her first national medal in 2012, earning the 4x400m relay silver at the Bielsko-Biala Polish Championships, but also triumphed with the gold at the Krakow Polish Club Championships and the silver at the Radom Polish U23 Championships. Meanwhile, during the season she won the 200m silver at the Sopot Janusz Sidlo Memorial.
In 2013, Emilia Ankiewicz won the 4x100m relay gold and 400m hurdles silver at the Lodz Polish Club Championships. In 400m hurdles, she also was on the podium at the Katowice Mityng LA AWF, Krakow Memorial Gwiazd, and Bydgoszcz European Athletics Festival, winning the silver, as well as Gdansk Jozef Zylewicz Memorial, winning the gold. At the Torun Polish Championships, she won the 4x400m relay gold, but also earned her first individual national award, winning the 400m hurdles bronze. At the end of the season, she won the 4x400m relay and 400m hurdles gold at the Biala Podlaska Polish Club Championships.
Emilia Ankiewicz continued dominating the local hurdles and relay, winning the silver at Sopot Polish Indoor Championships in the 4x400m relay, and the 400m hurdles silver and 4x400m relay gold at the Szczecin Polish Championships, as well as the gold at the Krakow Memorial Gwiazd Malopolskiej Lekkiej Atletyki in 400m hurdles.
Emilia Ankiewicz made her biggest achievement in 2015, triumphing with the 400m hurdles silver at the Gwangju Universiade. During the season, she won the 400m hurdles silver and 4x400m relay gold at the Krakow Polish Championships and Biala Podlaska Polish Club Championships, as well as the 400m hurdles bronze at the Janusz Kusocinski Memorial.
In 2016, Emilia Ankiewicz was part of the Polish team for the Rio Olympics, competing in 400m hurdles, but failed to reach the finals after finishing 7th in the semis. She also competed at the Amsterdam European Athletics Championships, finishing 8th in the final. She won the 400m hurdles gold at the Copenhagen Athletics Games and the silver at the Bydgoszcz European Athletics Festival, but also finished 4th at the Dakar IAAF World Challenge. Emilia Ankiewicz made her Diamond League debut in Rabat but finished 6th. Locally, she had podiums at the Bydgoszcz Polish Championships in 4x400m relay and 400m hurdles.
After the very strong season, Emilia Ankiewicz made a terrible start of the 2017 season with several unsuccessful events in the winter. During the summer season, she finished 4th at the Marseille Meeting International and Janusz Kusocinski Memorial but won the bronze at the Rehlingen Pfingstsportfest in 400m hurdles. She won the silver at the Copenhagen Athletics Games in 400m hurdles, while at the Bialystok Polish Championships won the 400m hurdles silver and 4x400m relay gold.
Emilia Ankiewicz started the 2018 season by winning the 600m silver at the Potchefstroom ACNW Track League already in January, but returned to the track and field only during the summer, by winning the 4x400m relay bronze at the Suwalki Polish Relay Championships. At the end of the outdoor season, she won the 400m hurdles gold at the prestigious Rovereto Palio Citta della Quercia.
In 2019, Emilia Ankiewicz won the 400m hurdles and 4x400m relay silver medals at the Radom Polish Championships, as well as the 400m hurdles silver at the Jelenia Gora Polish Club Championships. During the next season, she won the 800m bronze at the Torun Polish Indoor Championships, while in 2021 won the 400m bronze at the Poznan Polish Championships, ending her competitive career.
After 2021, Emilia Ankiewicz continued competing rarely mostly in triathlon, road running, and sprints. She still loves sports
