Puripol Boonson set a new Asian record for men’s 200m gold at Nagoya 2026

Athletics News . Sprints News Article

The track and field program at the in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, witnessed another moment of pure athletic history at the Mizuho Park Athletics Stadium. Following his breathtaking victory in the 100-meter dash, Thailand’s sprinting sensation Puripol Boonson returned to the track to complete a legendary continental sprint double. Blowing away a world-class field, the teenage phenomenon captured the gold medal in an astonishing, world-class time of 19.88 seconds.

Boonson’s performance was nothing short of a tactical and physical masterpiece. Running out of the middle lanes, he executed a flawless bend, utilizing his towering stride to swallow up the stagger on his outside competitors before even entering the home straight. Once he straightened out, Boonson unleashed a terrifying turn of foot, leaving the rest of the field battling for minor medals in his wake. By crossing the finish line in 19.88 seconds, he not only shattered the previous Games record but firmly established himself among the absolute elite double-sprinters on the global stage.

While the gold medal was decided early due to Boonson’s sheer dominance, a fierce and highly tactical battle unfolded directly behind him for the remaining spots on the podium. China’s rising star Youwen Huang delivered a beautifully measured race to secure the silver medal in 20.45 seconds. Huang, known for his strong finishing speed, managed his energy perfectly through a grueling curve. Standing strong against a late-surging pack down the final 50 meters, Huang held his form beautifully to claim a well-deserved second place, continuing China’s strong legacy in continental short-sprint events.

The local Japanese crowd found plenty to cheer about as home favorite Soshi Mizukubo claimed a hard-fought bronze medal with a time of 20.56 seconds. Mizukubo ran an incredibly aggressive first 100 meters, matching Boonson’s early intensity around the curve. Though the brutal pace took a toll on his legs in the final strides, Mizukubo showed immense grit to hold off the rest of the field, lunging across the line to ensure the host nation earned a spot on the prestigious 200m podium.

Finishing just outside the medals was Oman’s standout short-sprinter Ali Al Balushi, who crossed the tape in fourth place with a time of 20.72 seconds. Al Balushi, who had already tasted podium success earlier in the competition, looked poised for a repeat performance as he exited the bend. However, he just missed out on the necessary top-end gears in the closing meters to overhaul Mizukubo, falling agonizingly short of a second medal.

Rounding out the elite top five was India’s promising young talent Animesh Kujur, who clocked a solid 20.80 seconds. Kujur ran a balanced, mature race from the outer lanes, fighting hard all the way through the tape. His top-five finish highlights the steady rise of Indian sprinting depth on the continental level and caps off a stellar field of competition.

Ultimately, the evening was defined by the legendary speed of Puripol Boonson. By securing both the 100m and 200m titles in such dominant fashion, the Thai superstar has written a glittering chapter in Asian Games history, leaving Nagoya as the undisputed king of Asian sprinting.
