
Romanian athlete Maria Mihalache
Maria Mihalache is Romanian track and field athlete and one of the biggest talent in the country’s sprints. She is Balkan Indoor champion and nine-time national champion in sprints and relays.
Maria Mihalache was born on May 11, 2003. She started in athletics at school and showed great talents in running and sprints.
Maria Mihalache started her competitive career already in 2017, winning the 60m gold at the Bucuresti Romanian U16 Indoor Championships. She also competed at the Bucuresti Romanian U18 Indoor Championships, but at the higher age group the competition was fierce and she finished 6th in the final.
In 2018, Maria Mihalache won the 100m and 200m bronze at the Bucuresti Romanian U18 Championships, as well as 100m bronze at the Pitesti Romanian U20 Championships.
Showing a great results in the sprint, Maria Mihalache made her debut at the senior national championships in 2019, competing at the Bucuresti Romanian Indoor Championships, where finished 6th in the 100m final. She competed at the Balkan U20 Indoor Championships in 60m, but did not reached the finals. However, she succeeded to win the 60m gold at the Romanian U20 Indoor Championships and Romanian U18 Indoor Championships, both in Bucharesti. During the summer season, Maria Mihalache continue dominating the junior sprint events locally and triumphed with 100m gold at the Pitesti Romanian U20 Championships and Pitesti Romanian U18 Championships. She competed at the Baku 15th European Youth Olympic Festival in 100m and sprint medley 1,000m, but did not overcome the heats. However, during the season, she won her first national title, triumphed with the 4x100m relay gold at the Pitesti Romanian Championships, where also won the 100m bronze.
In 2020, Maria Mihalache won her first international honor, winning the bronze at the Istanbul Balkan U20 Indoor Championships in 4x400m relay and the silver in 60m. She also won the 60m bronze at the Bucuresti Romanian Indoor Championships and the 100m silver at the Cluj-Napoca Romanian Championships. At the Istanbul Balkan U20 Championships, she won the bronze in 4x100m relay and 100m, as well as the silver in 200m.
Maria Mihalache made her first real breakthrough in the athletics in 2021, winning the 100m and 200m titles at the Istanbul Balkan U20 Championships. She won the national titles at Cluj-Napoca Romanian Championships in 4x400m relay, 4x100m relay, but also finished second in 100m and 200m, while at the Bucuresti Romanian Indoor Championships finished second in 60m. She competed at the Tallinn European Athletics U20 Championships, finishing 8th in the 200m final. Maria Mihalache was also part of the Romanian team for the Nairobi World Athletics U20 Championships, competing in 100m and 200m, but did not reach the final. However, she appeared at the big world athletics forum and showed her great skills and talent.
In 2022, Maria Mihalache won the 60m silver at the Bucuresti Romanian Indoor Championships and finished 7th at the Istanbul Balkan Indoor Championships in the same event. At the Craiova Romanian Championships, she won the 100m and 200m gold. She competed also at the Cali World Athletics U20 Championships in 100m and 200m, but again did not qualify for the finals.
Maria Mihalache competed only at the local events in 2023, winning the 60m bronze at the Bucuresti Romanian Indoor Championships. At the Craiova Romanian Championship, she won the gold in 4x100m relay, but missed the honors in individual events.
In 2024, Maria Mihalache continue showing her dominance at the national championships. She won the gold in 100m, 4x100m relay, 4x400m relay at the Cluj-Napoca Romanian Championships, but also won the bronze in 200m. Her big international achievement during the season was also the 100m gold at the GRAND SLAM – Jerusalem.
In 2025, Maria Mihalache started the season at the I Meeting Internacional de Ourense in Spain, finishing 6th in 60m, before winning her first senior Balkan title, triumphing with the 60m gold at the Beograd Balkan Indoor Championships, setting her personal best in the event of 7.31 sec.
