
Serbian high jumper Angelina Topic
Angelina Topic is a Serbian athlete who specializes in the high jump. At just 17 years old, she secured a bronze medal at the 2022 European Athletics Championships, making her the youngest medalist in the history of the championships. Angelina Topic is also World U20 champion, European U18, U20, and U23 champion, two-time Diamond League winner, and European Indoor silver medalist. She currently holds the Serbian record for the high jump both indoors and outdoors, and she shares the world U18 best record for outdoor events.
Angelina Topic was born on July 26, 2005, in Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro. Her journey to athletics was inevitable, as her mother is Biljana Topic, the Serbian triple jump record holder, while her father is Dragutin Topic, the Serbian high jump record holder and European high jump champion. She started in athletics from an early age and showed her great skills and talent. She won her first senior national title in the high jump at the age of 16.
Angelina Topic started her competitive career in 2018. She finished 7th at the Bar International Meeting and 4th at the Beograd Serbian U16 Championships, both in the high jump with 160cm, before winning her first junior honor at the Sremska Mitrovica Serbian U18 Championships, where earned the silver. She ended the season by winning the gold at the Sremska Mitrovica Serbian U16 Club Championships.
In 2019, Angelina Topic competed at her first strong international event, finishing 12th at the Athens Filothei Women Gala 2019. Meanwhile, during the season she won the silver at the Serbian U16 and U18 Championships and at the end of the season won the bronze at the Memorijal “Mihajlo Mika Svraka”. She improved her personal best to 171cm.
Angelina Topic continue gaining experience and improving her results in 2020, clearing 181cm at the Memorial miting Mihajlo Mika Svraka, where won the gold. Meanwhile, she won the gold at the Serbian U16 Championships, Serbian U16 Indoor Championships, Lavlji skok meeting in Dimitrovgrad, the silver at the Serbian U18 Championships and the bronze at the Serbian U18 Indoor Championships.
In 2021, Angelina Topic won her first senior national titles triumphing at the Beograd Serbian Indoor Championships, where improved her personal best to 188cm, and Kraljevo Serbian Championships. She won the gold at the Istanbul Balkan U20 Championships and Kraljevo Balkan U18 Championships, and finished third at the Limassol European Athletics Team Championships Third League. She finished 6th at the Nairobi World Athletics U20 Championships, 8th at the Tallinn European Athletics U20 Championships, and 10th at the Smederevo Balkan Championships.
Angelina Topic made her breakthrough in 2022, at just 16 years old, she set a national senior high jump record of 196cm during the Krusevac Serbian Championships, matching the world under-18 record. The subsequent month, she triumphed in the high jump event at the European Under-18 Championships in Jerusalem, achieving a height of 192cm. In August, she secured a bronze medal at the World U20 Championships in Cali, Colombia, by clearing 193cm. During her first significant senior competition that same month, Angelina Topic claimed bronze at the Munich European Championships with a jump of 193cm, making her the youngest medalist in the entire championships. Additionally, she set national records in the pentathlon at both U18 and U20 levels that year.
In January 2023, Angelina Topic set a new Serbian indoor high jump record by achieving a height of 194cm during a Triple Match CRO-SLO-SRB held in Belgrade. Meanwhile, she won the Belgrade Open Indoor Championships and Beograd Serbian U20 Indoor Championship. She finished 4th at the Istanbul European Athletics Indoor Championships, repeating 194cm. She opened the outdoor season a the Athens Filothei Women Gala and won the gold. She earned her first Diamond League honor at the Meeting International Mohammed VI d’Athletisme de Rabat, finishing third. A few days later, Angelina Topic cleared 197cm to win another Diamond League bronze at the Meeting de Paris. She continue with her strong performance at the Jerusalem European Athletics U20 Championships and Kraljevo Serbian Championships, where triumphed with the title. Angelina Topic competed at the Budapest World Athletics Championships to finish 8th in the final, but won the silver at the Diamond League’s Memorial van Damme in Brussels and the bronze at the Diamond League Final at the Prefontaine Classic in Eugene. During the outdoor season, she improved her personal best to 197cm, clearing the height twice.
In 2024, Angelina Topic made her Olympics debut, qualifying for the Paris Games. She sustained a fracture in her right ankle while warming up for the qualifying session. Despite her injury, she managed to qualify; however, she ultimately had to withdraw from the high jump final. Meanwhile, she won the gold at the 30th Banskobystricka latka, Beograd Serbian Indoor Championships, Athens Filothei Women Gala, and Kraljevo Serbian Championships. Angelina Topic also won her first Diamond League meetings, triumphing with the gold at the Seashore Group Doha Meeting and Meeting International Mohammed VI d’Athlétisme de Rabat/Marrakech. During the season, she won the high jump silver at the Roma European Athletics Championship and the gold at the Lima World Athletics U20 Championships.
Angelina Topic started the 2025 season strongly, winning the gold at the Belgrade Indoor Meeting, silver at the BKK Freundenburg High Jump Meeting and the bronze at the 31st Banskobystricka latka. She won another national title at the Beograd Serbian Indoor Championships and earned the silver at the Apeldoorn European Athletics Indoor Championships, before finishing 4th at the Nanjing World Athletics Indoor Championships and narrowly missing the honor. She continue to perform strongly during the outdoor season, winning the gold at the 75. Boris Hanzekovic Memorial in Zagreb and the silver at the Athens Filothei Women Gala. She took part at two Diamond League meetings in Stockholm and Paris, but missed the honors finishing 8th and 7th, respectively. In July, she won the gold at the Bergen European Athletics U23 Championships, thus winning all the junior high jump titles in all age groups. Her next target in a honor from World Athletics Championships, that will be held in Japan in September.
