Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce: I am filled with gratitude for the journey I have traveled
Jamaican sprint veteran Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce recently made it clear that the 2025 season will be her last. The multiple Olympic and world champion, widely regarded as one of the greatest sprinters of all time, is ready to retire after a glittering career spanning more than two decades.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce’s final Olympic appearance at the Paris 2024 Games ended in disappointment after she was forced to withdraw before the semi-finals of the women’s 100m due to severe muscle cramps.
The incident, caused by an unusual interruption in her warm-up, raised concerns that her illustrious journey could end on a sour note.
However, the sprint queen refused to let the setback get her down and instead opted to return in 2025 for one final season, setting her sights on the World Championships in Japan.
“It feels great when something goes wrong and you don’t do it right, but then, with the perseverance and tenacity that you have, you get it right the next time. I think those lessons are things that I’ve used not only on the track but in life. It teaches me that just because today is a bad day, it doesn’t mean tomorrow is going to be a bad day. It can be a good day”, said Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
The 37-year-old athlete revealed that training and the constant improvement it brings will be what she will miss the most when she finally hangs up her spikes.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce admitted that it will be difficult for her to give up the rhythm of daily training, the pursuit of constant improvement and the feeling of getting closer and closer to her goals.
“As I prepare for my final national qualifiers, I am filled with gratitude for the journey I have traveled, for my teammates and most of all, for my people. Jamaica, your love has carried me and your pride has energized me. Every step I have taken has been with you by my side”, added she.
