Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s coach strongly criticizes the cancellation of the Los Angeles Grand Slam meeting
Bob Kersee expressed his disappointment at the cancellation of the fourth round of the Michael Johnson Grand Slam of Athletics circuit.
Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone was undoubtedly the face of the event, as the first announced athlete and star in all three editions to date. The world record holder in the 400m hurdles competed in the circuit’s debut in Kingston, Jamaica, while the second and third editions were held in Miami and Philadelphia.
The fourth round, scheduled for Los Angeles, was canceled at the last minute, prompting much comment, including from Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone’s coach.
In an official statement, Michael Johnson said the decision to end the inaugural season of the Grand Slam of Athletics was a difficult one.
“As we have said from the beginning, we will learn, adapt and continue to improve. Sometimes we have to make decisions that are not easy, but the most important thing is the future and sustainability of the league. The global economic situation has changed dramatically over the past year and this business decision was made to ensure our long-term stability as the leading track and field league in the world”, said Michael Johnson.
In a long post, Bob Kersee noted that the cancellation of the Los Angeles event was yet another example of the difficulties facing track and field. He expressed deep disappointment with Michael Johnson’s decision, noting that there have been a number of initiatives that have promised a lot to athletes but have not delivered on their promises.
Bob Kersee hit the root of the problem, urging organizers and sponsors to be more involved in making things happen.
“Our athletes are world-class. They train hard and deserve better. The Grand Slam brand of track and field still holds promise, but today, seasons and careers are being affected. I call on athletes (past and present), coaches, sports brands and corporate partners to get involved! We need leaders who will commit to sustainable investment in our sport. Our world-class athletes deserve world-class organization and commitment”, wrote Bob Kersee in Instagram.
Michael Johnson’s Grand Slam of Track and Field offered prize money to the top eight finishers in each event. The winners received $100,000, while second, third and fourth place winners received $50,000, $30,000 and $25,000, respectively. Athletes who finished fifth through eighth won $20,000, $15,000, $12,500, and $10,000.
