Woo Sang-hyeok won his second world indoor title in the high jump

Athletics News . High Jump News Article

South Korean athlete Woo Sang-hyeok won his second world indoor title in the high jump. The 28-year-old athlete was the only one to clear 2.31m and secure gold in Nanjing (China). The Korean was also the world champion in Belgrade in 2022, and last year in Glasgow he finished with a bronze medal.

New Zealander Hamish Kerr, who defended his title from Glasgow last year, remained with the silver medal this time, after clearing 2.28m on his first attempt and then making three fouls at 2.31m. Jamaican athlete Raymond Richards also finished with 2.28m, but cleared this height on his second attempt and thus remained in third position.

European champion from Apeldoorn two weeks ago Oleh Doroshchuk, who arrived in China with 2.34m, remained fifth also with 2.28m, but cleared on his third attempt, and before that he also managed 2.24m on his third attempt.

When the bar was raised to 2.28m, only six jumpers out of 13 finalists remained. Only Woo Sang-hyeok and Hamish Kerr cleared that height in their first jump. And the Korean was the only one to go over 2.31m, and did so in one attempt. Woo Sang-hyeok clinched the gold medal after his rivals all failed to match his mark, and elected to push himself further.
