Martina Weil breaks meeting record for the 400m gold at the 2026 South American Games in Santa Fe

Athletics News . Running News Article

The athletics program at the 2026 South American Games in Santa Fe, Argentina, has produced one of the most poignant and historic moments in the continent’s sporting history. Held from September 22 to 25, the Games bore witness to an extraordinary exhibition of power, poise, and family legacy in the women’s 400-meter final. Chile’s premier track superstar, Martina Weil, captured a brilliant gold medal with an astonishing time of 50.45 seconds, completely dominating the field and rewriting the history books in the process.

Weil’s victory was far more than an athletic triumph; it was a deep family milestone. Her winning time of 50.45 seconds broke the long-standing South American Games record of 51.31 seconds. That previous record had stood unassailed for 32 years, set in 1994 by none other than Colombia’s Ximena Restrepo—Martina Weil’s mother. Watching from the stands alongside Weil’s father, the four-time Chilean Olympic shot putter Gert Weil, Restrepo witnessed her daughter eclipse her own legendary mark. The triumph upgraded Weil’s silver medal from the previous edition of the Games four years ago and secured Team Chile’s 33rd gold medal of the Santa Fe competition.

From the sounding of the starter’s gun, Weil executed a masterclass in pacing and distribution. Having easily advanced through her semifinal heat with a controlled 51.39 seconds, she stepped onto the track as the overwhelming favorite. Operating out of the backstretch, she utilized her expansive stride length to quickly close down the stagger on her outer competitors. By the time the pack hit the final bend, the Chilean had established an unassailable lead, charging down the home straightaway nearly two seconds clear of her closest pursuer to claim a historic continental crown.

The battle for the remaining podium positions unfolded well behind Weil’s blistering pace. Colombia’s Lina Esther Licona Torres secured a well-deserved silver medal, crossing the line in 52.38 seconds. Licona Torres ran an incredibly tactical race, maintaining her composure through a demanding third 100-meter segment to hold off a charging field. Her silver medal continues Colombia’s proud, ongoing tradition of producing world-class quarter-milers and added another valuable accolade to the nation’s track and field tally in Santa Fe.

The local Argentinian crowd found plenty to celebrate as home-favorite Megan Powell clinched the bronze medal. Powell clocked a stellar 52.81 seconds to capture a spot on the podium. Having finished second behind Weil in the preliminary rounds, Powell adjusted her race strategy perfectly for the final. Digging deep over the final fifty meters, she utilized the vocal support of the Santa Fe fans to secure a vital bronze medal for the host country, finishing just ahead of a surging Brazilian contingent.

Missing out on the podium by mere fractions of a second was Brazil’s Jainy Suelen dos Santos Barreto, who crossed the line in fourth place with a time of 52.88 seconds. Dos Santos Barreto mounted a ferocious comeback in the final straightaway, but ultimately fell seven-hundredths of a second short of Powell’s bronze-medal mark. The top five was rounded out by her Brazilian compatriot Leticia Lima, who finished further back with a time of 53.65 seconds. The dual top-five placements for Brazil emphasized the continuous depth of their national 4×400-meter relay pool, even on a night where the individual spotlight belonged entirely to Chile.

The 2026 South American Games will undoubtedly remember this women’s 400m final as a definitive highlight. Martina Weil’s rapid ascent into the elite sub-50 second global tier over the past two seasons was reflected in her absolute command over the continental field. As the athletic events wrap up on September 25, the story of a daughter breaking her mother’s 32-year-old championship record will remain an enduring symbol of inspiration, passing the torch to a new generation of South American sprinting excellence.
