Gianmarco Tamberi has been voted the number one Athlete in Europe for September
The European high jump champion from Birmingham 2026, Gianmarco Tamberi, has been voted the #1 Athlete in Europe for September by fans.
In September, the Italian won the Mediterranean Games and later became champion at the Ultimate World Championships in Budapest. In the Hungarian capital, the eccentric athlete won first place and the trophy for the best result in the world for the season.
Gianmarco Tamberi is one of the most captivating and charismatic figures in modern athletics. Born on June 1, 1992, in Civitanova Marche, Italy, the high jump superstar has earned global acclaim not only for his extraordinary athletic leaps but also for his infectious energy, theatrical showmanship, and legendary resilience.
Tamberi’s career is defined by a historic triumph at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. After an grueling battle, he and Qatar’s Mutaz Essa Barshim found themselves deadlocked. In a rare moment of pure sportsmanship that touched millions worldwide, the two friends chose to share the Olympic gold medal rather than enter a jump-off. This victory was deeply emotional for Tamberi; just days before the 2016 Rio Olympics, a devastating ankle injury had threatened to end his career. He famously kept the plaster cast from his recovery, inscribed with the words “Road to Tokyo,” and brought it to the stadium as a reminder of his comeback.
Known affectionately as “Gimbo,” Tamberi is a crowd favorite who treats the high jump apron like a stage. For years, he entertained fans by sporting a unique half-shaved beard during finals. He regularly interacts with the audience, clapping his hands to orchestrate rhythmic support before taking flight.
Beyond his iconic Olympic gold, Tamberi has completed a clean sweep of major international honors. He is a World Outdoor Champion (2023), a World Indoor Champion (2016), and a multiple-time European Champion. His personal best stands at an exceptional 2.39 meters. Through his perfect blend of elite performance, emotional resilience, and vibrant personality, Gianmarco Tamberi has firmly cemented his legacy as a true icon of Italian sports and global track and field history.
