Liujing Yang strides to historic race walk gold in Nagoya

Athletics News . Race Walking Article

The athletics program at the 20th Asian Games in Nagoya, Japan, held from September 23–29, 2026, continues to showcase spectacular feats of endurance and athletic brilliance. On a grueling course designed to test the mental and physical limits of Asia’s finest race walkers, the women’s half marathon race walk delivered a tactical, high-stakes battle. When the dust settled on the Nagoya streets, China’s Liujing Yang emerged victorious, capturing the gold medal with a dominant time of 1:33:40 hours.

Yang’s victory further cements China’s historical dominance in the discipline, proving that meticulous technical precision and steady pacing remain the gold standard on the continental stage.

From the firing of the starter’s pistol, the race unfolded as a strict tactical encounter. The athletes faced a demanding loop that required flawless technique under the watchful eyes of international judges, where any structural lapse in stride could lead to costly time penalties or disqualification. Yang, a master of pacing, contentedly bided her time in the lead pack during the early kilometers, allowing her rivals to dictate the initial tempo.

As the race crossed the halfway mark, Yang made her decisive move. Unleashing a rhythmic, powerful acceleration, she systematically broke away from the field. Her fluid hip rotation and immaculate foot contact allowed her to build an insurmountable lead while maintaining a clean technical scorecard. Crossing the finish line alone in 1:33:40 hours, Yang celebrated a resounding victory, adding a prestigious Asian Games gold medal to her international collection.

While Yang comfortably locked down the top spot, the drama behind her reached a fever pitch in the closing stages of the half marathon distance. A relentless, side-by-side duel emerged between Kazakhstan’s Kristina Morozova and China’s second entrant, Yunyan Jiang, as they fought for the remaining podium places.

Morozova demonstrated incredible tactical grit, refusing to let Jiang break her resolve during the grueling final kilometers. In a roaring homestretch sprint where every stride mattered, the Kazakh athlete dug deep to stop the clock at 1:35:25 hours, securing a phenomenal silver medal.

Jiang crossed the line a mere second later in 1:35:26 hours, taking home the bronze. The razor-thin margin between silver and bronze highlighted the unforgiving nature of road racing, capping off an exceptional day for the Chinese delegation with two athletes standing proud on the Nagoya podium.

Representing the host nation with immense pride, Japan’s Ayane Yanai delivered a highly courageous performance to cross the finish line in fourth place. Buoyed by the passionate roars of local spectators lining the Nagoya barriers, Yanai pushed through the brutal late-race fatigue to register a strong time of 1:39:24 hours. While she fell short of the podium positions, her top-five finish earned widespread applause and valuable points for the host country.

Completing the elite top five was South Korea’s Seha Lee, who exhibited admirable persistence across the entire 21.097-kilometer distance. Lee managed her energy reserves beautifully to cross the line in 1:42:28 hours. Battling isolation on the roads during the final laps, the South Korean specialist relied on veteran composure to protect her position and round out a world-class top five.

The women’s half marathon race walk in Nagoya will be remembered for Liujing Yang’s masterclass in tactical distance racing, but the event also highlighted the immense depth and developing rivalries across the continent. With athletes from China, Kazakhstan, Japan, and South Korea filling out the top spots, the discipline remains one of the most fiercely contested programs in Asian track and field.

As the 20th Asian Games move forward into a thrilling week of competition, Yang’s gold-medal stride stands out as a definitive symbol of athletic perseverance, technical mastery, and championship poise on the roads of Nagoya.
