Daniel Kiprono Sang claims glory at the 2026 Casablanca Marathon in Kenyan dominance

The coastal avenues of Morocco’s economic capital erupted with athletic brilliance on Sunday, October 25, 2026, as the 17th edition of the Crédit du Maroc Casablanca Marathon took center stage. Boasting its newly minted World Athletics Elite Label status, the race drew a heavily competitive international field eager to test Casablanca’s flat, fast seaside loop. In a spectacular showcase of East African distance-running power, Kenya’s Daniel Kiprono Sang emerged triumphant, crossing the finish line in a world-class time of 2:06:41 hours.

From the 8:00 AM opening gun, the men’s elite vanguard made their aggressive tactical intentions clear. A heavy pack of Kenyan, Ethiopian, and local Moroccan contenders quickly settled behind the designated pacemakers, capitalizing on the early morning cool and the level seaside profile. The lead pack sustained a relentless rhythm, ticking off kilometer splits that kept them firmly on pace for a sub-2:07 finish.

As the race progressed past the 30-kilometer marker, the combination of the rising Atlantic maritime breeze and the heavy tarmac tempo began to take its structural toll. The frontline cluster began to fracture into distinct components. It was during this critical window of attrition that Sang made his defining move. Breaking away with fluid technical efficiency, the Kenyan star unleashed a punishing, sustained surge that none of his immediate rivals could successfully counter. His brilliant execution over the final section secured him the ultimate crown on his very first appearance at the event.

Securing the silver medal to anchor a majestic 1-2 finish for Kenya was the experienced Edwin Kiptoo (Edwin Kiprop Kiptoo). Kiptoo, who entered the competition as one of the pre-race favorites on paper, ran a highly courageous and structurally disciplined race. He fought valiantly to stay within striking distance of his compatriot but ultimately crossed the line just 36 seconds back, stopping the clock in an excellent 2:07:17 hours.

Completing the star-studded podium was Ethiopia’s Workineh Tadese (Mandefro Workineh Tadese). Tadese acted as an active animator of the early segments, repeatedly pushing the front pack to maintain an honest tempo. While he was unable to fully match the explosive gear changes unleashed by the Kenyan pair over the closing five kilometers, he showcased great determination to protect his placement, taking the bronze medal in 2:08:40 hours.

The single loudest roar from the passionate Moroccan spectators lining the final straightaway was reserved for local favorite Said Ibissou. Stepping up to the full 42.195-kilometer distance on his home roads, the Moroccan national standout delivered a masterfully measured performance.

Refusing to be intimidated by the aggressive surges dictating the front of the race, Ibissou locked into a highly sustainable tempo. Over the second half of the marathon, he methodically picked off fading international runners. Ibissou narrowly missed out on a podium placement but electrified the home crowd by finishing an exceptional fourth overall in 2:08:52 hours, cementing his status as a major rising force in Moroccan road racing.

Rounding out the elite top five vanguard was Kenya’s Sylas Chebii. Chebii engaged in a fierce, tactical sprint finish against Ibissou during the final kilometer, ultimately crossing the timing mats a mere six seconds later to complete the upper tier in a highly meritorious 2:08:58 hours.

The 2026 edition of the Casablanca Marathon will be remembered as a true celebration of elite athleticism and organizational growth. With participation expanding significantly by more than 30% to welcome nearly 9,000 finishers across all disciplines, the event has successfully transformed into a marquee destination on the African road-running calendar. For Daniel Kiprono Sang, the gold medal represents a career-defining pinnacle, while the incredible sub-2:09 depth generated by Kiptoo, Tadese, Ibissou, and Chebii signals a thrilling new era of global parity for the sport.
