Rahel Meili crowns herself Swiss National Marathon champion

Athletics News . Marathon News . Running News Article

The historic streets of Lucerne bore witness to a thrilling chapter in Swiss long-distance running on Sunday, October 25, 2026. Against a breathtaking backdrop of alpine panoramas and the tranquil waters of Lake Lucerne, the 19th SwissCityMarathon – Lucerne pulled double duty by playing host to the prestigious Swiss Marathon Championships. In front of thousands of spectators, the women’s championship race delivered an unforgettable blend of sports drama, ultimate endurance, and tactical surprises.

When the dust finally settled at the finish line at the Swiss Museum of Transport, Rahel Meili emerged as the undisputed queen of Swiss distance running, capturing her very first national title in a commanding time of 2:45:37 hours.

The 42.195-kilometer circuit, which starts in Lucerne and weaves through Horw, Hergiswil, and Stansstad before reaching Alpnachstad, is famously scenic but requires rigorous tactical discipline. The 2026 edition proved to be a masterful psychological battle, offering spectators a classic showcase of marathon pacing.

From the starting gun, a fierce tempo dictated the front of the pack. However, as is so often the case with the marathon distance, the final third of the race transformed the leaderboard. Pacing errors and the sheer physical toll of the Lucerne course forced shifts in the closing stages, sparking tremendous late-race drama. While some frontrunners suffered tough physical setbacks over the final kilometers, Meili executed a beautifully calculated, even-paced strategy.

Maintaining her composure through the critical “hotspots” of the course, Meili gradually dismantled the field. Her time of 2:45:37 hours solidified a breakthrough moment in her athletic career, earning her a celebrated gold medal on the national stage.

Selina Ummel

Behind the newly crowned champion, the battle for the remaining podium steps turned into a gripping, second-by-second thriller. Doris Nagel-Wallimann showcased her elite mental fortitude and deep physical reserves to cross the line as the national silver medalist. Clocking in at 2:46:43 hours, Nagel-Wallimann crossed just over a minute behind Meili, proving that her preparation for the demanding Lucerne course was precision-tuned.

Nagel-Wallimann’s silver medal was far from comfortable, as she was relentlessly pursued down the final straightaway by Selina Ummel. Ummel, putting on a spectacular display of late-race sprinting, fought valiantly to close the gap on second place. Ultimately, Ummel crossed the finish line a mere twelve seconds later, securing the bronze medal in an exceptional 2:46:55 hours. The incredibly tight gap between silver and bronze highlighted the immense depth and competitive drive present in this year’s Swiss elite field.

The high-caliber performances didn’t stop with the podium finishers. Joëlle Flück, a veteran presence in Swiss athletics, put together a highly commendable performance to finish in fourth place. Crossing the finish line in 2:50:44 hours, Flück demonstrated remarkable consistency, holding off a late surge from her remaining pursuers.

Rounding out the elite top five was Rachel Poffet, who completed the rigorous course in 2:51:46 hours. Poffet’s stellar top-five placement locked in a highly elite upper tier of runners who all managed to comfortably break the 2-hour-and-52-minute barrier on a course known for its rolling terrain and technical corners.

The elite women’s championship race was the jewel of a broader, spectacularly successful day for the SwissCityMarathon – Lucerne. The 2026 event marked a milestone for the organization, celebrating an all-time record of 13,044 finishers across all categories, which also included a heavily contested half-marathon won by orientation-running legend Matthias Kyburz.

The festive atmosphere—fueled by over 30 live music groups along the course and an estimated 50,000 cheering fans—provided the perfect amphitheater for Meili, Nagel-Wallimann, and Ummel to shine. As Rahel Meili stood atop the podium wrapped in the Swiss flag, the 2026 Swiss Marathon Championships concluded not just as a test of speed, but as a beautiful celebration of athletics culture in Central Switzerland.
