American sprinter Brendon Stewart retired at only 26
Sprinter Brendon Stewart, who trained alongside Olympic silver medalist Sha’Carri Richardson at Star Athletics, has announced his retirement from competitive running. After a decade on the track, the 26-year-old American has made the unexpected decision to retire from competitive sports.
Brendon Stewart was a key member of the University of Southern California’s 4×100-meter relay team that won the 2022 college championship in a school-record time of 38.49 seconds.
The athlete shared the news on Instagram, stressing that his retirement does not mean the end for him, but simply the closing of an important chapter in his life. He said he has found inner peace in recent weeks with the decision after feeling like he was losing his passion for the sport that had brought him so much happiness for so long.
Brendon Stewart was adamant that this was not a temporary break, but a final farewell to professional athletics. He posted a series of photos with his statement, capturing iconic moments from his career — shots from the track, with his teammates and with the coaches who shaped him as an athlete.
Among the experts who left their mark on his development are 2004 Olympic champion Joanna Hayes, current head coach at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas Carmelita Jeter, director of the athletics program at the University of Southern California Quincy Watts, and former mentor at the university Caryl Smith-Gilbert.
Brendon Stewart expressed deep gratitude for all the friendships he made and the opportunities he was given. He shared that the sport has allowed him to travel the world and these experiences remain invaluable to him for a lifetime.
Although he is retiring at just 26 years old — a time many consider the peak of an athlete — Stewart acknowledges the unusual timing of his retirement but believes life still holds many great challenges. He stressed that no one can take away what he has achieved on the track, concluding his emotional address with the words: “The end of an era. B-Stew is coming to an end.”
