Angelica Maria Gamboa wins razor-thin 100m final at 2026 Colombian Athletics Championships

Athletics News . Sprints News Article

The senior women’s 100-meter final at the 2026 Colombian Athletics Championships produced one of the most dramatic and closely contested finishes in the tournament’s history on Friday, October 30. Staged at the high-altitude, speed-friendly track of the Estadio de Atletismo La Flora in Bucaramanga, the blue-ribbon event gathered the nation’s premier short-sprint specialists. In a breath-taking blanket finish that required extensive photo-finish verification, Angélica María Gamboa captured a heroic gold medal, stopping the clock at 11.59 seconds to reclaim her position at the pinnacle of national sprinting.

The anticipation surrounding the women’s 100m final reached a fever pitch following heavily competitive preliminary heats. Running under excellent conditions with a perfectly legal tailwind of +1.0 m/s, the eight finalists exploded out of the blocks in near-flawless synchronization.

Angélica María Gamboa, representing the powerhouse league of Valle del Cauca, relied on her veteran composure to weather an aggressive mid-race surge from the outer lanes. Having endured a difficult season marked by a string of narrow defeats, Gamboa ran with a fierce sense of urgency, transitioning beautifully from her drive phase into top-end velocity.

As the lead vanguard approached the final ten meters, three athletes were completely inseparable. In a desperate, maximum-effort plunge for the finish line tape, Gamboa threw her torso forward with such velocity that she suffered an extremely heavy crash upon crossing the line, sliding across the track surface. The spectacular fall resulted in severe shoulder abrasions and a bruised hip, but her sheer physical commitment paid off handsomely. The timing monitors confirmed that her torso had broken the plane first in 11.59 seconds, restoring the 100m national crown to the Valle department.

While Gamboa was attended to by trackside medical staff, the official scoreboard highlighted the razor-thin margins that define elite sprinting. Danna Meivis Bánquez, representing the Bolívar department, pushed Gamboa to the absolute limit. Bánquez executed a magnificent race, closing down the gap in the final strides to clock a brilliant 11.60 seconds. Missing out on the national title by a mere single hundredth of a second, her silver-medal performance confirmed her status as an elite force on the South American circuit.

Completing the high-caliber podium was Atlántico’s rising star, Marleth Ospino. Ospino, who would later rebound to win the individual 200-meter national title later in the weekend, showed exceptional drive through the middle 40 meters to cross the mats in 11.63 seconds to secure the bronze medal. The closely bunched podium block—separated by a mere four-hundredths of a second—illustrated the impressive evolution of domestic sprint depth.

The sheer quality of the field meant that any athlete registering over 11.7 seconds was left completely outside the upper echelon of the standings. In another extraordinary statistical quirk, the race for fourth and fifth places required a microscopic breakdown of thousandths of a second.

Evelin Rivera locked down fourth place officially with a time of 11.64 seconds, bouncing back well after intense training cycles. Mirroring her exact official time down to the hundredth, Lenis Vanegas completed the coveted elite top five, also stopping the clock at 11.64 seconds. The identical times of Rivera and Vanegas underscored a thrilling era of Colombian track and field where every single lane assignment is heavily contested.

Final Standings in Colombian Championships women’s 100m
1. Angelica María Gamboa – 11.59 sec
2. Danna Meivis Bánquez – 11.60 sec
3. Marleth Ospino – 11.63 sec
4. Evelis Rivera – 11.64 sec
5. Lenis Vanegas – 11.64 sec

Organized smoothly by the Federación Colombiana de Atletismo (FCA), the 2026 National Senior Championships served as an essential sorting ground for future international selections. The fierce competitive environment on display in Bucaramanga bodes remarkably well for Colombia’s relay infrastructure as the national squads begin constructing their training maps for the upcoming South American and global championship cycles.

Gamboa’s dramatic victory will be remembered as a definitive testament to athletic courage. Her willingness to sacrifice her body at the tape not only secured her personal redemption after a taxing season but also raised the standard of excellence for every sprinter watching from the stands at La Flora.
