Australian sprinter Gout Gout is threatened by new young talents
Australian sprinter Gout Gout, inspired by Usain Bolt, may soon face his toughest competition yet. Two teenagers are emerging on the world athletics stage, threatening his status as Usain Bolt’s successor. The 17-year-old Australian has been heralded as the next big sprint star, breaking records from a young age and drawing comparisons to the Jamaican legend.
Gout Gout welcomes the comparisons to the fastest man in history.
“It feels great. I know a lot of sprinters have run here really well. Usain Bolt has run here nine times, so it definitely has a great tradition”, said Gout Gout. “Who doesn’t want to be Usain Bolt? Being compared to him is great, but I want to put my own individuality into the future of history”, added he.
But the competition is heating up fast. Last month, 16-year-old Japanese sensation Sorato Shimizu broke the world record in the 100m for under-18s.
His 10-second run at the interschool championships not only secured him victory by almost three-tenths of a second, but also broke the previous record of 10.06 sec, held jointly by Christian Miller and Puripol Boonson. His achievement has caught the attention of experts, who predict that Sorato Shimizu could dominate the sprint in the future. His time is not just exceptional for his age – it would be competitive at the elite level.
While Sorato Shimizu is a clear threat to Gout Gout in the 100m, another talent is emerging in the middle distances. Earlier this month in Oregon, American teenager Cooper Lutkenhaus stunned the world with a time of 1:42.27 min in the 800m. At 16, Cooper Lutkenhaus became the 18th fastest man in history over the distance, finishing second to 2019 world champion Donavan Brazier.
His average speed of 28.16 km/h in the race would have been enough for Olympic gold at every Games except 2024, 2016 and 2012.
“I saw someone coming up and I thought: Holy shit, that could be the high school kid”, commented Donavan Brazier after the amazing run. “This kid is phenomenal. I’m glad I’m 28 and I hope I don’t have to face him in his prime because he’s definitely a special guy”, added he.
For Cooper Lutkenhaus, the moment was both surprising and rewarding:
“Obviously I wasn’t expected to make the team, a lot of people didn’t think I’d make it to the final, so to be able to do that was a special moment”, said Cooper Lutkenhaus.
Gout Gout is now under pressure to defend his title of Most Exciting Young Runner. All eyes will be on the 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo, where the Australian is expected to compete and potentially face Sorato Shimizu and Cooper Lutkenhaus.
