Edmund Serem won the men’s 3,000m steeplechase gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games

Athletics News . Running News Article

Kenyans dominated the men’s 3,000m steeplechase event at the XXIII Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with Edmund Serem winning the gold with 8:18.23 min. Simon Koech finished second with 8:18.59 min, while Leonard Kipkemoi Bett finished third in 8:21.63 min.

The race was quickly led out by the Kenyan trio despite an elite start list that included world champion George Beamish.

Koech continued to keep the others level with Bett and Serem following well behind. Serem appeared to be finding his stride, chasing Bett, who went toe-for-toe with Koech though the final.

“Today I’m very happy, because I won my first gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. I know my family and all the 55 million Kenyans are proud of me, and it’s a great way to end the night”, said Edmund Serem after the race. “Actually I didn’t expect to win, because the field was very strong, having a world champion in the race and also Simon Koech who has managed a sub-eight minutes this season, running 7:59. I can say I’ve done well and I would like to thank my father who kept on calling me all the time today, preparing me for the race”, added he.

Edmund Serem is the 2025 World Championships bronze medalist, 2024 World U20 champion, as well as African Championships silver medalist in the event.
