Olympic champion Gabby Thomas and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone won their events in the first Grand Slam Track in Kingston, Jamaica. The next three events are in the United States – in Miami, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.
Three-time Olympic champion Gabby Thomas won the women’s 200m in 22.62 sec, earning 12 points for the overall standings. She will also run the 400m later today.
“I feel good and confident going into the next event, although there will be some very tough competition at that distance”, said Gabby Thomas.
Marileidy Paulino of the Dominican Republic finished second in 22.93 sec, with Dina Asher-Smith (Great Britain) remaining three hundredths behind with the bronze.
World record holder Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, also of the United States, won the 400m hurdles in 52.76 sec. Her compatriot Dalilah Muhammad was second in 54.59 sec, and Rushell Clayton (Jamaica) was third in 55.02 sec.
Ejgayehu Taye (Ethiopia) finished first in the 3,000m in 8:29.42 min, followed by Agnes Jebet Ngetich (Kenya), who clocked at 8:28.75 min. Tsigie Gebreselama was third in 8:38.15 min, completing a double podium for Ethiopia.
American Nikki Hiltz won the 800m in 1:58.23 min, while Ethiopian runner Diribe Welteji finished in 1:58.29 min and Australian athlete Jessica Hull finished with bronze in 1:58.58 min.
The tournament is led by four-time Olympic champion Michael Johnson, who has described the Grand Slam Track as the “Formula 1 of athletics”. The total prize money is 12.6 million USD and will be distributed after the events in Miami, Philadelphia and Los Angeles.
