Geoffrey Kamworor chases a record at Rotterdam Marathon

Athletics News . Marathon News Article

Two-time New York City Marathon champion Geoffrey Kamworor is hoping to set a personal best at the Rotterdam Marathon on April 13. Kenyan long-distance runner’s current best in the classic distance is 2:04:23 hours from the 2023 London Marathon, when he finished second to world record holder Kelvin Kiptum.

The 32-year-old Geoffrey Kamworor is hoping for an even faster time on one of the fastest courses in Europe.

“I’m coming to Rotterdam to break my personal best”, said Geoffrey Kamworor

The Rotterdam course record is held by Belgian runner Bashir Abdi with a time of 2:03:23 hours from 2021. He came close to that mark with a time of 2:03:47 hours in 2023.

Geoffrey Kamworor secured the silver medal in the 10,000m at the 2015 World Championships in Athletics. He achieved remarkable success at the World Half Marathon Championships, winning three consecutive titles from 2014 to 2018. Additionally, he earned individual championships at the World Cross Country Championships in both 2015 and 2017, finishing third in 2019. Geoffrey Kamworor claimed his first World Marathon Major victory at the 2017 New York City Marathon and successfully defended his title in 2019, following a second-place finish in 2015. He also finished as the runner-up at the 2023 London Marathon and recorded three other podium finishes in World Marathon Majors.

At the age of 18, he became the 2011 World Junior Cross Country champion. Geoffrey Kamworor previously held the world record for the half marathon, having completed the Copenhagen Half Marathon in 58:01 min in September 2019. This record remained unbroken until December 2020, when Kibiwott Kandie surpassed it at the 2020 Valencia Half Marathon.
