
Innes Fitzgerald won a European U20 gold double in 3,000m and 5,000m in Tampere
British middle-distance running talent Innes Fitzgerald won a European U20 gold double in 3,000m and 5,000m at the Tampere European Athletics U20 Championships.
The British athlete clocked 8:46.39 min in 3,000m to claim the gold in the event and break the championships record. She was followed by the Swedish athlete Carmen Cernjul, who although was far behind her won the silver with 9:08.87 min. The bronze went to Wilma Bekkemoen Torbiornsson of Norway with 9:10.70 min.
Innes Fitzgerald also won the gold in women’s 5,000m again with amazing lead to her opponents. The British athlete clocked 15:09.04 min in the event, followed by Edibe Yagiz (Turkey) with 15:43.60 min. The bronze was for Julia Ehrle (Germany) with 15:44.06 min.
The Top 5 were completed by Jana Jahanova (Czech Republic) and Freya Frandley (Great Britain), who missed the podium.
In women’s 1,500m, another British runner triumphed with the gold. Lyla Belshaw won the event with 4:14.59 min, followed by Carmen Cernjul (Sweden) and Isobelle Jones (Great Britain) with 4:15.00 and 4:16.18 min, respectively.
