Ireland announce strong squad for European Athletics Team Championships
Ireland have announced a 46-strong squad for the European Athletics Team Championships Division Two, to be held in Maribor, Slovenia, on June 28-29, 2025.
The Irish team includes experienced 100m hurdler Sarah Lavin, a finalist at the European, World and European Indoor Championships. She was the winner when Ireland won promotion from Division Three two years ago in Silesia.
European U23 Championships 1500m gold medalist Sophie O’Sullivan has been selected for the women’s 800m. Nicola Tuthill is also included in the hammer throw. The 21-year-old won the U23 European Athletics Cup in Nicosia in March and recently broke the Irish under-23 record of 71.71m.
Sharlene Mawdsley, who ran the final leg to give Ireland a historic gold medal in the 4x400m medley relay at the 2024 European Championships in Rome, has been included in the relay team.
“We are delighted to be sending such a strong team to the 2025 European Athletics Team Championships”, said Paul McNamara, Director of High Performance at Athletics Ireland. “This is a very special event, as any athlete who has had the privilege of competing in it knows. The team element brings out the best in our athletes and finishing high in the standings is a priority for everyone. We view this event as a key indicator of our place among European nations, an opportunity to gain world ranking points and meet qualification standards, as well as providing valuable international experience to established and young athletes in preparation for upcoming major championships”, added he.
