Iwatani Corporation team dominates Women’s 4×1500m Relay Record Challenge
The middle-distance running community witnessed an extraordinary showcase of teamwork, pacing, and athletic endurance at the Women’s 4×1500m Relay Record Challenge on November 1, 2026. Held at the Lemon Gas Stadium in Hiratsuka, Japan, this specialized event brought together elite domestic quartets with a singular objective: to push the boundaries of the grueling 15-lap relay format. When the dust settled, Iwatani Corporation emerged as the dominant force, securing a commanding victory in an outstanding time of 17:20.12 minutes to cement their status at the pinnacle of national distance running.
The 4×1500m relay is a rare and mathematically beautiful spectacle in track and field, requiring four distinct athletes to each master the tactical intricacies of a full 1500-meter race before executing a flawless baton exchange. With 15 laps of the track distributed across four legs, teams must strike an exact balance between aggressive front-running and energy conservation.
From the opening leg, the corporate team from Iwatani Corporation demonstrated precise tactical preparation. Ayano Shiomi took charge on the first leg, using her seasoned international experience to establish a smooth, metronomic rhythm. Shiomi kept the pace hot from the gun, ensuring that Iwatani Corporation occupied the clean air at the front of the pack and forced their rivals to chase.
As the baton transitioned seamlessly to Ayu Koyama for the second leg, Iwatani’s strategy became clear. Koyama squeezed the tempo through the middle laps, stretching the field and exposing gaps in the trailing quartets. By the time Iroha Kodama took over for the third leg, the lead had swelled significantly. Kodama ran a fiercely solitary leg against the clock, maintaining an aggressive cadence that set up anchor runner Mahiro Hasegawa perfectly. Hasegawa stopped the clock at a spectacular 17:20.12, bringing home a dominant performance that left no doubt as to who owned the track.
While Iwatani Corporation operated in a league of their own at the front, a captivating battle unfolded for the remaining spots on the podium, showcasing the depth of middle-distance talent in Japan.
The Japan Industrial Track & Field Association (JITA) team put together a highly commendable performance to lock down the runner-up position. The JITA squad—comprising Mei Hokiyama, Jierushayuri Mayaka, Yuka Sakajiri, and Haruru Asahi—fought valiantly across all 15 laps. Though they gradually lost contact with the blistering pace set by the Iwatani vanguard, their consistency across all four legs was highly impressive. Anchored by a strong closing push from Asahi, JITA stopped the clock at 17:40.44 to comfortably claim the silver-medal position.
Less than seven seconds behind, the university selection team representing the Inter-University Athletics Union of Japan (IUAUJ) rounded out the podium with a thrilling performance. The student quartet of Mana Aiba, Fuka Otagaki, Mizuki Endo, and Koharu Shinoda proved they could hold their own against elite corporate entities. IUAUJ executed a smart, patient race plan, pacing their efforts efficiently to counter the mid-race surges from JITA. Shinoda anchor-legged the team home to a final time of 17:47.39, securing a fantastic third-place finish.
Though the official women’s world record of 16:27.02—held by America’s Bowerman Track Club since 2020—remained out of reach, the Hiratsuka event achieved its broader goal. The Record Challenge provided a platform for specialized long-relay formats that rarely find a place on standard championship schedules.
For Iwatani Corporation, the performance marks a historic benchmark for their distance program. The chemistry and synchronized pacing exhibited by Shiomi, Koyama, Kodama, and Hasegawa will likely serve as a blueprint for domestic clubs aiming to contest middle-distance relay records in the future. As these athletes transition back into their individual 800m and 1500m winter training cycles, the camaraderie and competitive sharpness forged at Lemon Gas Stadium will undoubtedly provide a massive psychological edge.
