Legendary Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce retires after the World Athletics Championships
Legendary Jamaican sprinter Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce will retire from competition after the world athletics championships in Tokyo next month.
The three-time Olympic and 10-time world gold medalist said she would compete again in 2025, saying she had unfinished business after withdrawing from the 100m final at the Paris 2024 Olympics due to injury.
“I didn’t get the chance to do what I know I could do at that moment”, said Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, 38, in a video call with reporters. “And it was painful. It was the first time in my entire career that I didn’t get to step on the track to compete”, added she.
Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce qualified for her ninth world championships, finishing third in the 100m in Jamaica. She said the world championships, which begin on September 13, will be not only a farewell but also a celebration of her resilience.
“To stand on that starting line is a huge accomplishment. I really can’t wait to celebrate the history, the dedication and the joy that this sport has given me”, said Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce.
As for her race-day hairstyle, fans can expect something bold.
“My hair is really distinctive. I want to be competitive and I want to be myself and authentic”, said Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, who is known for her brightly colored hair.
