Matea Parlov Kostro powers to Croatian 10km Road title in Zapresic
Matea Parlov Kostro produced a commanding performance to claim victory in the women’s 10km race at the Croatian Road Running Championships in Zapresic on October 31, stopping the clock at 33:09 and finishing more than a minute clear of her nearest challenger.
The experienced Croatian distance runner demonstrated her class throughout the championship race, maintaining a strong tempo over the flat and fast course to secure another national title. Her winning time of 33:09 highlighted both her strength and consistency as she crossed the line comfortably ahead of the chasing pack.
Behind the champion, Bojana Bjeljac delivered a solid performance to take the silver medal in 34:17. Bjeljac remained one of the few athletes capable of maintaining contact with the leading pace during the early stages, but Parlov Kostro gradually increased her advantage as the race progressed. Despite the growing gap, Bjeljac ran a composed race and was rewarded with second place at the national championships.
The battle for the final podium position was equally competitive, with Tea Faber securing the bronze medal after finishing in 34:24. Her performance ensured three athletes broke the 35-minute barrier, underlining the quality at the front of the field. Faber’s determination over the closing kilometres proved enough to hold off the athletes behind her and earn a place on the national championship podium.
While the top three established clear separation from the remainder of the field, the contest for fourth and fifth places provided one of the closest finishes of the day. Dora Brzović crossed the line in 36:12 to secure fourth position, but only one second behind her came Hela Rakamarić in 36:13.
The narrow margin between Brzović and Rakamarić illustrated how intensely contested the race remained beyond the medal positions. Both athletes demonstrated impressive resilience over the final stages of the course, with virtually nothing separating them after 10 kilometres of racing.
For Parlov Kostro, the championship victory further strengthened her reputation as one of Croatia’s leading female road runners. Running at an average pace of just over 3 minutes 18 seconds per kilometre, she showcased the combination of endurance and speed that has made her a consistent performer on the national and international scene.
The winning margin of 1 minute and 8 seconds over Bjeljac was significant at championship level and reflected Parlov Kostro’s control of the race. From the midway point onward, she appeared firmly in command, steadily extending her lead while maintaining a pace that none of her rivals could match.
Bjeljac’s runner-up finish nevertheless represented an excellent result. Her 34:17 performance would have been enough to challenge for victory in many domestic championships, but on this occasion she encountered an athlete performing at an exceptionally high level. Silver was a deserved reward for a disciplined and competitive run.
Faber also had plenty to celebrate after securing the bronze medal. Her 34:24 clocking placed her within striking distance of Bjeljac and confirmed her place among the strongest performers in Croatian women’s road running this season. Completing the podium at a national championship is always a notable achievement, and Faber demonstrated both endurance and tactical awareness to earn that distinction.
Further down the standings, Brzović and Rakamarić delivered admirable performances in their own right. Finishing fourth and fifth at a national championship represents a significant accomplishment, and the pair pushed each other all the way to the finish line. Their one-second separation was among the closest margins recorded in the leading positions and added extra excitement to the concluding stages of the race.
The championship in Zapresic once again highlighted the depth of women’s distance running in Croatia. With three athletes under 35 minutes and a competitive battle throughout the top five, spectators were treated to an impressive display of endurance racing. The event also provided athletes with an opportunity to measure themselves against the country’s best road runners and compete for one of the most prestigious titles on the Croatian domestic calendar.
As the runners crossed the finish line after 10 demanding kilometres, it was Matea Parlov Kostro who stood tallest. Her decisive victory in 33:09 earned her the Croatian women’s 10km road-running crown, with Bojana Bjeljac taking silver in 34:17 and Tea Faber claiming bronze in 34:24. Dora Brzović and Hela Rakamarić completed the top five in 36:12 and 36:13 respectively, rounding out an excellent championship race in Zapresic.
