Matthew Denny achieved an impressive result in the discus throw but admitted that his goal was a world record
Matthew Denny achieved an impressive result in the discus throw, becoming the first Australian to throw over 70m in the event. At a competition in Ramona (Oklahoma, USA), he recorded a result of 72.07m, which is the fifth highest in the history of the discipline. Matthew Denny previously held the Australian national record of 69.96m from last year’s Diamond League final.
His winning attempt, as well as another result of 71.12m in this competition, would have been enough for Olympic gold in Paris.
Only world record holder Mykolas Alekna, Jurgen Schult, Virgilijus Alekna and Gerd Kanter have achieved better results than Matthew Denny in history.
“I am very, very proud of myself and my team. We have finally crossed the 70-meter mark, but the work is not done yet. We came here for one reason and that was the world record”, said a happy Matthew Denny after his achievement.
The world record of Mykolas Alekna is 74.35m from 2024.
Matthew Denny is an Australian sportsman who specializes in the discus throw. He secured a bronze medal in the men’s discus event at the Paris 2024 Olympics.
