Rahel Daniel dominates in women’ 5km road running at Memorial Bruno Lolli
The sixth edition of the Memorial Bruno Lolli produced a high-quality women’s 5 km road race in Zola Predosa, Italy, on September 26, with Eritrean athlete Rahel Daniel delivering an outstanding performance to take victory in 15:29.
Daniel established herself at the front from the early stages and maintained a strong pace throughout the race, crossing the finish line 21 seconds ahead of her nearest challenger. Her winning time of 15:29 underlined both her strength and consistency over the distance, making her the clear winner of one of the standout events on the programme.
Behind Daniel, a fierce battle unfolded among some of Italy’s leading road and track runners. Elisa Palmero secured second place in 15:50 after a determined effort that kept her firmly in contention throughout the race. Palmero’s performance was enough to separate her from the athletes immediately behind, earning her a well-deserved runner-up finish.
The fight for the remaining podium positions proved particularly competitive. Rebecca Lonedo claimed third place in 15:55, producing a strong closing effort to secure the final spot on the podium. Lonedo finished just five seconds behind Palmero, highlighting the intensity of the contest among the leading Italian contenders.
Only four seconds behind Lonedo came Federica Zanne, who finished fourth in 15:59. Zanne narrowly missed joining the podium but nevertheless delivered an impressive sub-16-minute performance. Her result demonstrated the depth of quality in the women’s field, with less than ten seconds separating second and fourth places.
Rounding out the top five was Sofia Ferrari, who crossed the line in 16:10. Ferrari maintained a solid pace over the 5 km course and completed an excellent showing by finishing inside the top five against a particularly strong field. Her performance ensured that five athletes broke the 16:11 mark, a testament to the overall standard of competition in Zola Predosa.
The race showcased a combination of international and Italian talent. While Daniel’s victory was decisive, the battle behind her provided plenty of excitement for spectators, with Palmero, Lonedo, and Zanne engaged in a closely fought contest for the podium places. The narrow time gaps among these athletes illustrated how competitive the event was from start to finish.
A winning time of 15:29 is evidence of Daniel’s excellent form and places her performance among the strongest road 5 km results seen on the Italian road racing circuit this season. Her ability to create a clear gap over a high-calibre chasing group emphasized her class on the day.
For Palmero, second place in 15:50 represented another significant result in a season marked by consistent performances. Lonedo’s third-place finish in 15:55 confirmed her competitive edge over the road distance, while Zanne’s fourth-place clocking of 15:59 showed she was only narrowly denied a podium position. Ferrari’s 16:10 effort completed an impressive top-five line-up and reinforced the depth of Italian women’s distance running.
