Reigning world and Olympics champion Grant Holloway did not qualify for the 100m hurdles final in Tokyo
For the first time since 2019, a new world champion in the 110m hurdles will be crowned at the World Athletics Championships. The unexpected results in Tokyo continued on Tuesday night when reigning world and Olympic champion Grant Holloway, the second-fastest 110m hurdler in history, finished sixth in his semi-final in 13.52 sec. Having won the world title in 2019, 2022 and 2023, the American failed to reach the final and will not continue his unbeaten streak.
After a difficult start to the regular season, Grant Holloway’s problems continued in Tokyo as he was eliminated in the 110m hurdles semi-finals.
Grant Holloway boasts an impressive personal best of 12.81 sec, just one-hundredth of a second shy of Aries Merritt’s world record of 12.80 sec, set in 2012. Grant Holloway won the world title in 2023 with a time of 12.96 sec, and a year later won Olympic gold with a time of 12.99 sec. He also holds the world record in the 60m hurdles indoors (7.27 sec).
The American athlete was not in top form before this year’s world championships. His season-best of 13.11 sec places him 13th in the world for 2025.
