Sander Skotheim set a new Norwegian decathlon record to win Hypo-Meeting in Gotzis
Sander Skotheim continued his excellent form in 2025, setting a new Norwegian record and climbing to seventh in the all-time decathlon rankings, winning the event at the 50th anniversary Hypo-Meeting in Gotzis, Austria.
Having won gold in the heptathlon at the 2025 Apeldoorn European Athletics Indoor Championships and the 2025 Nanjing World Indoor Championships in March, including a European record of 6,558 points in the former event, he entered the summer season with high confidence.
Sander Skotheim showed excellent form from the start in Gotzis and finished with 8,909 points, a 274-point improvement on his previous personal best, achieved when winning a silver medal at the 2024 Roma European Athletics Championships, and a 113-point improvement on Markus Rooth’s previous national record, set when winning Olympic gold in Paris last summer.
Sander Skotheim now shares seventh place in the all-time rankings with Canadian athlete Pierce LePage, who collected 8,909 points when winning gold at the 2023 Budapest World Athletics Championships. In excellent form, Sander Skotheim certainly has similar global ambitions for the next edition, which is just three months away in Tokyo.
On the first day, Sander Skotheim started brightly with a personal best of 10.70 sec (+0.7 m/s) in the 100m on Saturday (May 31) and was consistent throughout the day, finishing third with 4,611 points. On the second day, a personal best of 49.18m in the seventh event β ββthe discus throw β put him at the top of the standings and he did not relinquish his leading position.
American Kyle Garland finished second with 8,626 points, while Simon Ehammer (Switzerland) and Niklas Kaul (Germany) shared third place with 8,575 points. For Simon Ehammer, it was a Swiss national record. The two-time European medallist (silver in Munich 2022 and bronze in Rome 2024) showed his usual excellent performance in the long jump, achieving 8.34m (+1.7 m/s). This is the second longest jump in the world this year.
For Niklas Kaul, the 2019 world champion and gold medalist at the 2022 Munich European Athletics Championships, it was also a promising start to the season, including a personal best of 11.12 sec (+2.0 m/s) in the 100m.
