Tajay Gayle produced an extraordinary final-round response to capture the men’s long jump title at the 2026 Diamond League Final

Athletics News . Long Jump News Article

Jamaica’s Tajay Gayle produced an extraordinary final-round response to capture the men’s long jump title at the 2026 Diamond League Final. Flying down the runway on Friday, September 4, the former world champion unleashed a massive season-best leap of 8.46 meters on his sixth and final attempt to steal the victory. The dramatic, come-from-behind masterclass highlighted the opening evening of the historic 50th-anniversary edition of the Allianz Memorial van Damme at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels.

The men’s horizontal jump discipline unfolded under immense tactical tension. Under the winner-takes-all guidelines of the Wanda Diamond League Final, regular-season qualification points were completely erased, forcing the world’s absolute elite to execute their peak strategies under true championship duress.

Reigning Olympic and multi-time global champion Miltiadis Tentoglou of Greece entered the Belgian capital as the heavy favorite. Chasing his first overall series crown in four years, Tentoglou put immense pressure on the field early on. Though Gayle initially seized an early edge with a strong second-round mark of 8.21 meters, Tentoglou answered back deliberately, floating out to a world-class 8.40 meters to take the lead into the business end of the competition.

With only one jump left to alter his fate, Gayle refused to settle for second place. Standing at the top of the runway for his sixth attempt, the Jamaican standout synthesized absolute speed with perfect board timing. He struck the plasticine perfectly and sailed through the air, landing at 8.46 meters to completely reverse the standings and secure his second career Diamond Trophy.

The clutch performance solidified Gayle’s reputation as one of the most dangerous final-round jumpers in modern track and field history.

The frantic battle at the top of the leaderboard pulled the chasing international field to impressive depths. Tentoglou’s early excellence ultimately yielded a silver medal at 8.40 meters after he found no response for Gayle’s final assault. Switzerland’s versatile multi-event superstar Simon Ehammer secured the bronze medal, rounding out the podium spots with a very competitive final mark of 8.23 meters.

Bulgaria’s rising talent Bozhidar Sarâboyukov cracked the elite eight-meter benchmark to claim a commendable fourth place, hitting exactly 8.00 meters. Jamaica celebrated double top-five representation as global medalist Wayne Pinnock placed fifth with a mark of 7.94 meters. Local Belgian home favorite Yanni Sampson triggered great roars from the grandstands at the King Baudouin Stadium, matching strides with the global giants to finish sixth overall.

The conclusion of the Allianz Memorial van Damme functions as the definitive apex of the regular calendar, determining who enters the final stretch of the tracking year with ultimate momentum. This 2026 iteration carried even higher structural stakes than usual. The high-stakes clash in Brussels served as the definitive global gateway and final high-profile dress rehearsal before elite horizontal jumpers migrate directly to Hungary for the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championship in Budapest.
