Valarie Allman reclaimed the North American discus throw record at the Oklahoma Throws Series
The two-time Olympic champion Valarie Allman (USA) reclaimed the North American discus throw record with an impressive throw of 73.52m at the Oklahoma Throws Series, part of the World Athletics Continental Tour Bronze meeting, held in Ramona on Saturday.
This achievement marks the longest women’s discus throw globally since 1989, picking up Valarie Allman to sixth place on the all-time world rankings.
In a competition renowned for outstanding performances, world champion Laulauga Tausaga-Collins also set a personal best, reaching 70.72m and surpassing the 70-meter mark for the first time, securing a second-place finish.
Valarie Allman commenced her series with a throw of 69.52m, a season-best that surpassed her opening throw of 66.72m achieved in Austin last month. She followed this with a second-round throw of 65.01m before making a significant leap up the all-time rankings with her next attempt.
Valarie Allman’s 73.52m in the third round not only surpasses her previous best but also the US record of 71.46m set in San Diego in 2022. This record had stood as the North American record until Cuba’s Yaime Perez threw 73.09m in Ramona last year.
However, Valarie Allman reclaimed the area record on Saturday, following her 73.52m with throws of 66.71m and 68.10m, before concluding her series with a throw of 70.16m.
Her compatriot Laulauga Tausaga-Collins set a personal best of 70.72m in the second round, while her fellow American, Veronica Fraley, also achieved a personal best of 68.72m, securing third place.
