World’s top runners attack the 5,000m world record at Oslo Diamond League
Hagos Gebrhiwet, Yomif Kejelcha and Berihu Aregawi are part of a star-studded line-up that will attack the 5000m world record at the Diamond League in Oslo next month.
The world’s top 5000m runners will gather at the Diamond League in Oslo on June 12 to continue their bid to break the world record for the first time in five years.
Ethiopian stars Hagos Gebrhiwet, Yomif Kejelcha, and Berihu Aregawi will join Kenyan rivals Jacob Krop and Nicholas Kipkorir Kimeli at the Bislet Games in a line-up that includes eight of the world’s top 20 ranked 5000m runners.
In addition to the valuable Diamond League points, they will all be aiming to beat Joshua Cheptegei’ss world record of 12:35.36 min, set at the 2020 Diamond League in Monaco.
The record has been under threat several times in recent years, most notably at last year’s Diamond League in Oslo, when Hagos Gebrhiwet missed the mark by just over a second.
Berihu Aregawi currently leads the Diamond League standings alongside Kenyan Reynold Cheruiyot. The Ethiopian ran a race record of 12:50.45 min to win in Shanghai, while Reynold Cheruiyot took the win in a personal best of 13:16.40 min in Doha.
