Ablelom Maryo wins the 2026 Taiyuan Marathon after thrilling sprint finish
The 2026 Taiyuan Marathon, held on September 27, delivered one of the most dramatic and closely contested finishes in the event’s storied history. Under clear skies in the capital of Shanxi province, China, an elite international field pushed their physical boundaries across the grueling 42.195-kilometer course. Ultimately, it was Eritrea’s Ablelom Maryo who emerged victorious, capturing the men’s title in a nail-biting, full-sprint finish with a stunning time of 2:10:11.
The World Athletics Gold Label road race drew over 40,000 participants across its various categories, but all eyes were on the lead men’s pack as they entered the final stages of the race. The tactical battle remained fiercely tight through the closing kilometers, with the leading athletes matching each other move for move, defying the fatigue and heavy lactic acid buildup caused by the course’s challenging sections.
As the finish line approached, the race dissolved into a pure test of closing speed. Maryo, showing incredible tactical patience, launched a fierce kick that just managed to hold off a furious final charge from Kenya’s Benard Kipkorir. Kipkorir matched Maryo stride for stride until the final meters, crossing the line a mere two seconds behind the winner to secure a brilliant second-place finish in 2:10:13.
Rounding out the high-quality international podium was Ethiopia’s Tafere Adisu. Adisu, who remained a constant threat to the lead throughout the morning, delivered a highly resilient performance to lock down the third position, stopping the clock at 2:10:19. The razor-thin margin of just eight seconds separating the top three finishers highlights the elite caliber of competition on display at this year’s Taiyuan Marathon.
The tactical depth of the front pack extended beyond the podium. Experienced Ethiopian marathoner Asefa Mengstu finished just outside the medal positions, securing fourth place with a solid time of 2:10:43. Mengstu used his veteran pacing to keep pressure on the lead triad, ensuring the tempo remained relentless until the final kilometers.
Meanwhile, the home crowd found plenty to celebrate in the performance of elite Chinese marathoner Shaohui Yang. Yang, a highly respected figure in China’s long-distance running community, fought bravely against the international powerhouse contingent. Showing great resolve through the final stages of the course, Yang completed the top five with a commendable time of 2:11:55. His fifth-place finish secured him the top spot among domestic runners, capitalizing on the Taiyuan Marathon’s newly revamped incentives aimed at celebrating elite Chinese athletes.
