Tigist Gashaw shattered the women’s course record to claim a decisive victory at Taiyuan Marathon

The 2026 Taiyuan Marathon, held on September 27, produced a masterclass in elite distance running as Bahrain’s Tigist Gashaw shattered the women’s course record to claim a decisive victory. Navigating the scenic but challenging urban course in Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, Gashaw crossed the finish line in a blistering 2:24:11 hours, slicing more than a minute and a half off the previous women’s event record of 2:25:45. Her command performance highlighted an exciting day of road racing that saw elite international athletes lock horns with a formidable cohort of Chinese domestic contenders.

From the sounding of the starter pistol, the women’s elite pack formed a tight lead group determined to make use of the cool autumn morning conditions. However, it was Gashaw who took definitive control as the race progressed into its late stages. Representing Bahrain, the 29-year-old athlete dictated a brutal tempo that gradually wore down her immediate challengers.

Her finishing time of 2:24:11 not only secured her the gold medal but established a historic new standard for the Taiyuan Marathon. Gashaw’s strategy was executed with precision; by breaking away cleanly during the final quarter of the race, she avoided a tactical sprint finish, cruising across the line to cement her status as one of the premier marathoners on the Asian circuit following her previous win at the 2025 Chongqing Marathon.

While Gashaw ran a lonely race at the very front toward the end, the battle for the remaining podium positions kept spectators enthralled. Ethiopia’s Chernet Misganaw showcased her trademark durability to secure second place, crossing the line in 2:27:37 hours.

Misganaw, a seasoned road racer, fought hard to maintain visual contact with Gashaw but was ultimately forced to switch to a defensive strategy to safeguard her runner-up position. Despite being unable to match the winner’s devastating late acceleration, Misganaw’s performance was highly commendable, holding off a late charge from the domestic field to secure an international one-two finish at the top of the leaderboards.

Beyond the top two international steps, the story of the 2026 Taiyuan Marathon was the exceptional depth displayed by the host nation’s long-distance runners. Chinese elite women filled out the remaining positions in the top five, demonstrating the impressive progression of domestic marathon running.

Leading the charge for the home crowd was Ying Lu, who captured a brilliant bronze medal. Lu broke the tape in 2:29:45 hours, breaking the coveted 2:30 barrier and validating her status as a rising star in Chinese distance running. Lu paced her race meticulously, remaining patient while early pacesetters faded, and capitalized on her remaining energy reserves to comfortably lock down third place.

Less than a minute behind her, Min Liu delivered an equally spirited performance to finish fourth, clocking a time of 2:30:40 hours. Liu narrowly missed out on a podium finish but fought tooth and nail through the final kilometers to keep her competitors at bay.

Rounding out the top five was Bingjie Xu, the youngest athlete in the leading pack. Born in 2003, the 23-year-old prodigy clocked an impressive 2:31:10 hours. Xu’s inclusion in the top five underscores the bright future of Chinese athletics, as she ran a mature, disciplined race alongside far more seasoned international veterans.

The results of the women’s field highlight why the World Athletics Gold Label Taiyuan Marathon continues to be an attractive fixture on the international running calendar. With an upgraded course record, sub-2:30 performances, and a thrilling showcase of domestic talent, the event delivered everything fans and officials had hoped for. Gashaw’s spectacular time raises the bar for future editions, ensuring that the road to marathon glory in China continues to run through the streets of Taiyuan.
